Decided to open a Penfed checking today to use as my main checking account with the goal of eventually getting a credit card after I gardened for a year or so, but decided to take a chance for a card since it's the same hard pull so I'm not losing out on anything, and because you just never know, and to my surprise I was approved for $2500. And they had 4 different designs for the Gold card to choose as well.
Heres my story and why I didn't think I'd be approved. Went on a massive app spree in May, approved for 5 cards and was denied for many others, most notably denied by Chase and Citi and Wells Fargo. Got 14 inquiries on Equifax (I'm pretty sure Penfed pulls EQ, right?) Have about 12% utilization and 14 equifax inquiries, 10 of those inquiries were done in 2016 and 13 of the 14 inqs are less then 1 year old. My Equifax score I'd guess is around 670-690. Was about 690 last time DCU Digital Federal Credit Union gave my my free fico in my checking account and my AAOA is like 8 months. Can't believe with that many new accounts and inqs on my report that I got approved! I thought Penfed was a fairly conservative lender and would consider me an Egyptian, but whatever. I was approved!
Went with the gold because I'd assume it'd be the easiest because it has no rewards and little to no perks. Not sure how true that is or if one card really is easier then the other to get approved for but I'm happy! Although the Platinum Rewards is a Visa Signature so I'm sure that requires a 5k limit and would be harder then the other cards.
Congratulations! I love PenFed!

Great news! Have a blast with your new card!
Thanks guys!
One question if anyone knows, how do you deposit cash into the Penfed checking account? It says i'm not currently eligible when I try to use the mobile deposit check featurue on the app, upon research seems like Penfed places limits on these things for new members. Maybe after 6 months I can use it?
Can anyone comfirm if I can successfully deposit cash into my Penfed account with a CU24 atm? Funny the ATM locator on Penfed's site lists no CU24 atm but here http://www.cu24.com/ATMLocator/ there are tons of ATMs that accept deposits listed within 10 miles of me in the Minneapolis/St Paul area. Right now I transferred my current money to my paypal and will be depositing it that way until I get my direct deposit set up at work.
Had this experience with USBank. My USBank debit card has the moneypass logo on it and apart of the moneypass network, yet I went to an Associated Bank branch which has a moneypass ATM and tried using their automated cash deposit to put cash into my USBank checking account, it ended up spitting my cash out saying unable to deposit into that account.
Congrats and welcome to the PenFed family!

PenFed doesn't care about the $5K thing. My Defender Visa is a Signature, and it's $4K.
