requesting a higher CL after application & approval

I just applied for the Starwoods AMEX and was instantly approved, but was expecting a higher credit limit than what I received.  I’m bummed.  Has anyone had luck calling a credit card company like American Express and asking them to raise the credit limit?  I want/need more credit. 

How do I go about getting it higher without having to wait 6-12 months?

It's simple. Just apply for yet another card

Are you sure though you need more credit?

One bit of advice regarding AMEX CLIs: You can only request a CLI once every 6 months.
