So about 5 years ago when I was 18, my mom and her ex surprised me with a new car. My mom was on the loan and they put me as a co-signer so that I could start building credit(I didnt know they did that till a few years after). Fast foward to today, I was paying the car loan and we both made sure it was never late(it was automitcally deducted from my bacnk account) so luckily its in good standing. My mom unfortunally had to declare bankruptcy due to a 10,000 fence loan that she was somewhat forced into signing for. So not to hurt my credit, my mom let the bank take her car and she and I are sharing my car for the time being. She's actually makign the payments now so i'v had an extra $400 a month coming into my pocket which i'v used to elminate almost all of my debt(about $500 left on one credit card which I used to pay tuition one semester).
My problem isi'm worried how i'm going to be able to get an auto loan. Luckily for me, my FICO score was around 755 and I havent had any deliqiuient activity nor any late or missed payments. Other than a credit inquiry(I applied for a Capitol One Auto loan and was approved but the terms were strict so I didn't used the check) I have a pretty flawless credit history(in my opinion). Will having that one auto loan that i'm co-signed for make it difficult for me to get an auto loan? The remaining balance on the current loan is about $4000 which my mother is making extra payments so to have it paid off in a year.
Provided the car wasn't included, the BK doesn't matter at all here. It wouldn't be on your reports at all. I don't think you'd have an issue where FICO is concerned so as long as you are current on all of your other accounts. Your were able to get the car loan before by being the cosigner. You shouldn't have any difficulty getting it on your own again.
