Freeze your credit reports before going into the dealership. By law they can request your SS to identify you. You are going to be driving their car and for liability reasons they need fo confirm you are indeed John/Jane Smith. Most dealerships will just ask for your driver's license. The shady ones will run your credit (yes a hard inquiry) while you are out on the test drive. Yes you could probably file a complaint and successfully remove the HIq but who wants to deal with that. Freeze your reports. Its free.

For just a test drive, I would have no problem handing over multiple forms of ID, even my insurance card. But If they needed a social security number, I would walk and find another dealer.
