Carmax....

I know many get approved for financing at Carmax and get cars there, I wanted to share my experience so you don't have to go through what I went through....

So I have to state my experience with Carmax. I got a 2008 LS-460 in Sept of 2019. In the paperwork I signed it stated they checked everything on the car and all passed their inspections.

Well, in one month of owning the car the lights on the radio went out and the suspension broke.

Independent dealers and Lexus all stated if the lights in the radio go out, we replace the entire radio, Carmax did not do that, they ripped apart the radio and soldered on diodes or lights on the radio circuitry. Three months later they are all burned out again.

Carmax put aftermarket parts on the car for the suspension

My car was vandalized while at their service center.

The bottom line is this, they don't adequately inspect the cars before selling them and when you do have to use their service department they will do the repairs to their standards, which are the absolute cheapest.

Regarding the Maxcare warranty, mine was through CNA, I paid 3500.00 and I found out after I purchased it, these warranties are break down warranties, which means they don't authorize repairs until parts actually break.

Let me give you an example, I took my car to one of the top independent mechanics in Los Angeles and they stated all 8 control arms, part of the suspension needed replacing. CNA stated, we won't replace one control arm until this other part of your suspension is leaking. So to actually use an extended warranty you purchase at Carmax, remember item have to actually break, and while you are waiting a year for that to happen, you are driving around with a terrible suspension on a car you pay hundreds for monthly.

I would suggest not getting a car from them, my experience was beyond terrible.

All of this took place in Burbank, CA Carmax.

Re: Carmax....

100% agree!

I have not had the best experience with Carmax service. I chose not to buy the extended warranty but after purchase within the 30 day window I brought it in 3 times for a rattling noise that they disregarded everytime. Turns our my E-brake was super loose and some piece of the cable was swinging around. They also do not offer refinance, while I am grateful they helped me get into a car when I was in need, the 13% apr is OUTRAGEOUS and I can not get out of it because my car is too old to refi anywhere...

Ugh.

TLDR; YUP! Not impressed with any part of their shtick.

Re: Carmax....

I have had the complete opposite experience.

You bought a 12 year old car.

The radio worked for a month, right?

How could they have know it would go out a month later?

Rebuild started in 2014  -  $100k unsecured credit in 2017  -  $500k unsecured credit in 2024.

If he is like me, if the radio actually stops working, I had a foolproof method of getting others to pay for a new radio. Just give friends and family rides, and sing the whole time. Tell them you are doing that because the radio is broken. The end result would be they would buy me a radio or quit asking me for a ride. That is a win-win deal.

Re: Carmax....

Chances are you'll get the same experience from Carvana, Vroom and Shift since they buy cars from Joe Q public, that is the bulk of their used car inventory for all them.

Validating cars is tricky. If it was confirmed that the radio for example was modified by a contractor I'm sure not anybody at CarMax and didn't have the budget to replace the radio that is likely what happen and it worked at the time of purchase and you didn't get any extended warranties so their hands are clean.

The suspension breaking is a serious issue and could be several things not just blamed on parts bought from a company that makes them in China, Mexico or any other developing country.

On top of this factor that I know going in to Carmax, et-al is why others (several in the media) recommend buying either CPO's or used cars from the franchise dealer, IE if you buy a Ford from a Ford dealer.

If you are gong to pay more for a used car which IS the case at CarMax et-al, you might as well spend that extra cheese to get a CPO. There are some good financing deals on CPO's until the end of the month, including 0% up to 72 months and cash back.

Look up the Car Coach on YouTube, Lauren Fix's channel is very informative and she's race driver too (so is her husband Paul Fix). She just posted what the best deals are on CPO's.

I was reminded reading this of a true experience I had. I once bought a heavily used ford ranger pickup truck for 1000 dollars cash. About 2 weeks later, it lost much of its power and could barely get up a hill and smoked badly. The rings were apparently bad, and I attempted to get a refund, but was denied, even though I was certain the used car dealer knew of the issue. A friend at work told me to get a can of restore and put it in the oil, I have heard before to never add such things as it will gum up the engine, but in this case I had little to lose. After adding restore, within hours the smoking stopped and compression returned, but I did not expect much service on the bad engine. About 5 years and 65000 miles later, I sold the truck for 800 dollars even though I told the buyer of the engine issue. I had never done anything to the truck except plugs, oil changes, tires, and adding restore every month or so. In retrospect, even though I was furious for not being told of the bad engine, I had in fact driven that bad engine for 5 years for 200 dollars. I did not even do the oil changes as frequently as you are suppose to due to having to add some oil every time it started losing compression. If figured as cost per mile driven, I have never had any vehicle even come close to that little expense, and it was still running just fine when I sold it. If the rings are bad, Restore is one oil addative that really does work.

So my experience was not terrible with Carmax, but it was a decade ago, so who knows if their business practices changed.

I personally never get extended warranties, but that is me, as it is a waste when I have a live-in master automotive tech, my SO.

It did have the 30d warranty and it was 4 years old, but under 50k miles, so it still had a 5yr/50k manufacturer warranty. The brakes squeaked and of course instead of making my SO do the work I took it in to the dealership. No dice. Took it in 3 times, still squeaked. Took it to my SO and he fixed it.

I get it, I compare apples to oranges here because no manufacturer, automotive tech, mechanic, or warranty will care about my car more or take as much time needed to get things done right than my SO.

Point being, they evaluated every time I brought it in and they made sure nothing major was wrong. I got oil changes and xx mile service done for free due to the transferable manufacture warranty. The car lasted beyond the 6 year life of the loan (I had it 7 years), it still has no major problems, I was able to sell it no problem, and they it is still cruising along no problem. It is now a 17 year old vehicle.

The car buying process was easy and simple and if you are simply looking to buy a car, it isn't bad at all. I had much worse credit than I do now and still walked away with single digit interest rate. So I cannot knock Carmax for the car or the process. Of course in regards to their extended warranty, I cannot speak to that whatsoever.
