Charged Off Account on Vehicle

Hello, I'm new to the forum. I made the mistake of purchasing my first car at a local car dealership. It was a 2015 Altima worth $6000 but by the time they put their interest rates on it due to me having no credit, it was at $12000. I had the car for a year and some change, paid off $2000 before the transmission went out. My finance company didn't want to work with me and I had no warranty on the car. All in all it was a very stupid purchase and now I am in the market for a new car, preferably a used one that I can buy cash, however I need tips on how I should go about this being "charged-off" on my credit report as well as what I should be looking for on my search for a new car.

Re: Charged Off Account on Vehicle

I'm assuming it was already charged off? Are they coming to get the car?

Basically what's going to happen is they should repo the car and sell it at auction. The repo, towing, storage, and auction fees will be added to the amount owed and then they'll subtract what it sells for. At that point, it will act like any other charge off. They'll try to collect, hire someone to collect, or sell the debt. If sold, a collection agency will start reporting it on your credit so that you have 2 negatives accounts for the same debt. Somewhere along the line, the original creditors, or CA may try suing you.

As for a new car, stick with Toyota, Lexus, or Honda as they tend to be most reliable. Typical repairs depending on mileage are oil leaks, control arms, ball joints, or sensors. You'll want to have a pre-purchase inspection done as something like control arms can cost $800-4300 depending on car and whether you get it repaired at a dealership.

Yes, I gave it back to them once I realized I wouldn't be able to pay for the repair and the car. Thank you for the advice.
