I refinanced my car loan through DCU and on the 29th of last month DCU mailed a check to Wells Fargo to pay off the car. I saw last week DCU reported the loan on my credit report so I though everything was being processed as it should be. Last Friday I got a call from Wells Fargo telling me my car payment is late. I knew that already because it was due on December 15th and I planned on paying it on the 28th if I was going to be denied for the refinance. Since I was approved I figured Wells Fargo would get the pay off check before I was 30 days late. So I called Wells Fargo on Friday and they told me they haven't received a pay off check. They told me if they don't get the check or I don't make a payment by the 14th they will report me as 30 days late. I really want to avoid that as I have come a long way in the last year rebuilding my credit and don't want the negative mark. The other issue is now that it is past 10 days from when the check was issued it will not be enough to cover the pay off amount.
I called DCU on Friday and was on hold for over an hour and I had to go to work so I had to hang up. I called back Saturday and got to someone in the loan department. They told me they would get a hold of someone in accounting to see if the check was cashed yet and then call me back today. I never got a call from them so i called back today. The rep I talked to said the loan department was closed and she would send them an email. What should I do at this point? I only have until Saturday before Wells Fargo reports me as 30 days late. I wonder if DCU can stop payment on that check and send another one with some sort of tracking so i can prove Wells Fargo got it. I could be wrong but I wouldn't be supprised if Wells Fargo received the check already and is taking their time processing it to try to get more money out of me. With issues I have had with them in the past and things I have read and heard from other people I wouldn't put it past them. Worst case if I could prove when the check was mailed would I have a legitimate dispute to have the late payment removed from my credit? . Anyways if anyone has any advice I would appreciate it.
If I were you, I would make the payment to Wells Fargo. You don't want to have to deal with a 30-day late payment. Still persue DCU to see the status of your payoff check but don't risk a late payment. JMO

^^^I forgot to answer this question: No, it doesn't help your case if you prove the check was mailed within the timeframe. When you sign for a loan you are responsible for each and every payment right up until the day it is paid off. Once the loan hits 30 days, then it can be reported on your credit report, no matter the reason. Please don't mess with this - it just isn't worth it.
By all means necessary make the payment to Wells Fargo. They will refund you the overpayment. Having a 30 day late will really be quite a blow to your credit.
Plus by making the payment, the payoff will not be short.
Do whatever you have to do to make that payment.
How short is the payoff from DCU? Wells isn't going to release their lien until they are paid off in full.
I explained the situation to DCU and they are going to issue a new check with an updated pay off amount and FedEx it overnight so I have proof Wells Fargo got it. Had to fill out a form and email it to DCU. On hold finalizing everything now. If FerdEx tracking shows they got the check on time I'm thinking that's all the proof I need if Wells Fargo pulls anything. I'm so glad I wont have to deal with them anymore after this. They have been horrible to deal with the last year. I will never do business with them again.

I understand where you are coming from - but why wouldn't DCU wire the funds for payoff?
They could have at least told me FedEx was an option in the beginning. I would have paid extra for that. Knowing how bad Wells Fargo is with dealing with mail (they wouldn't even sign for certified mail i sent to the mailing address they gave me on the phone) I would have opted to have some sort of tracking if I knew that was an option. DCU has good products and some of their customer service is helpful but i have had to call about 6 times waiting on hold for hours trying to get answers about this.
A new check has now been sent over night to Wells Fargo with a signature required when it is delivered. Unfortunately they told me to issue a check for an updated pay off amount they would have to do a new loan application so I will just pay the difference and be done with it. It is only about $70.
