Should I reapply?

I applied for an auto loan with my Credit Union back in 02/13.  They pulled Equifax, and my credit score was terrible at that time.  Since then I've been working on clearing up my credit.  My Equifax score is now a 669.  Is it too soon to reapply to my credit union?

I have adequate income, low DTI, mortgage, and 2 previous car loans on my credit report.  Should I waste time reapplying to my CU so soon, or should I go through a dealership for financing?

Did they provide specific reasons on the denial such as high utilization, too many inq, public record, etc? If so, have you addresed those reasons?

Re: Should I reapply?

Honestly I would apply to both and see what comes up and what they offer you. By them pulling all at one time it will only show as 1 inquiry instead of many. I think you have like 30 days and they will bunch them all together so if your not afraid of one inquiry id do it. Plus too you will be able to see if someone will offer you a better rate.

Re: Should I reapply?

CashOnDelivery,

They denied my loan back in February because of medical collections and high utilization.  The medical collections have been paid and removed and the credit cards now have a zero balance.  My score has increased drastically.  I just didn't know if it was wise to reapply so soon (4 months) after a denial or if I should give it more time.

PBAJ,

Do you know how much the one inquiry will drop the credit score?

Re: Should I reapply?

How many inquires do you have already? I just applied for a car loan and was approved I applied through more than a few though and it dropped about 6 pts because of so many of them. When they update their systems it will then be counted as only one inquiry. I wouldn't worry too much about it. They understand that you need to find the best rates or approvals. Most of the time our credit scores we see are not accurate it is just a rough estimate. They may see your score much higher or sometimes a bit lower. I had things on my credit as well about 4 months ago and cleared it all up too so it shows I have literally nothing on my credit. I found that I had a harder time getting a loan simply because it showed that I had no credit and my DTI was 0. When you apply definately look into a credit union first they are much more likely to lend since they are federal backed. To be honest they are much nicer as well. If you apply to a regular bank they can sometimes discourage you from still trying. Plus by applying to many at one time and only getting one inquiry makes much more sense than getting one and then trying again in a few months and getting another one. Also if you have a cosigner to back you that tends to make a huge difference because then they know either way that you will make sure everything is paid and if not then the cosigner will have to pay it. Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions!

One thing I forgot to ask is have you ever had any bad auto history (lates, repos, etc)? If you never had any or if was a good while ago (at least 4+ years ago), then you may be ok for that part. How many inquiries do you have on each reporting agency in the last 6 months and past 2 years?

Re: Should I reapply?

I have two 30 day lates on my current vehicle that I'm financing through Santander.  It was back in August/September 2012.  I've attempted to have Santander update that but they won't.  It was due to a payment date change, but they dinged me with the 30 day lates for both months. I've had my current car with them for the last 4 years and had never been late.  Since that happened, I've been working to increase my credit scores to get rid of them every since.

I only have 1 inquiry on my credit report in the last 6 months.  I have 4 inquiries in the past 2 years.  I do not have any repos on my credit.  I didn't mention that my husband's scores are a little higher than my scores.  He doesn't have any lates on his current car.  We're thinking of applying jointly.

That late is recent and it's dragging your score and could also affect your auto-enhanced score. If your husband has a higher score and doesn't have any lates now or in the past, his auto-enhanced score may be higher than yours. As an option, your husband could apply for the loan and have you as the joint-applicant. Assuming his inquiries are not more than yours. I went this route on my last vehicle, my wife had the higher score but no income and I had the income but a really low score (high 500's) Btw, is your husband attached to the current loan you have?

Re: Should I reapply?

What's an auto-enhanced score?  Unfortunately, my husband is on the Santander loan with me.  However, he has a truck (about 4 years now) that has never been late.  I was not able to be on that loan b/c my scores were too low.

I'm not sure how many inquiries my husband has.
