WWYD Question

I want to buy a Tahoe or Land Cruiser so I can tote all kids and pull the horse trailer and am looking to buy next spring.

Issue one: Hate the price on new or certified pre owned.
Issue two: I am worried about the safety of the 20 year old 4runner I am running as it is rusting under the second row seats on the frame. I already run it as little as possible (5,000 miles a year), but I am having fear attacks of my kids falling through while driving (however unlikely that is at this time).
Issue three: Purchasing one of the above now versus spring would stress my budget. Spring I will be in a position to comfortably swing the costs even if I don't like it.

So, I am debating on buying something cheaper like a new Corolla or certified small suv that I can buy for under $15,000 even though it won't fit our complete needs just to satisfy my fear. I am the only driver in the house. I also don't feel comfortable in cars, but the cheap price and fantastic gas mileage are a massive pull to weigh out discomfort for safely and costs.

Would you wait and buy what fits and will be a long term purchase till it dies or would you buy a temporary vehicle?

Re: WWYD Question

Since I would be paying on it for a few years, I would wait. Doesn't make sense to buy something and then trade it in later, because that's what I would want to do if I bought a car I didn't want. If safety is a concern, buy a minivan outright for cheap to get you by.

Re: WWYD Question

^^^ agreed. Get something that's structurally sound until you're ready to buy your "real" vehicle. Keep the car you buy now as a backup for when (not if) the spring purchase needs repairs or maintenance.
