I live in Sacramento CA. Any advice on which CU I should open a relationship (checking & savings) with in order to better my chances of getting low rates in the far future? I currently only have checking accounts with Citi and Chase. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.
EDIT: Seeing alot of people financing their cars with DCU, can I open one or do I have to live in Massachusetts? What are some benefits of opening a relationship with them?

Agree with Kenny. Definitely DCU.
Which account should I open with them?

A savings account should be enough. If you want the lowest rate, you need a checking account and direct deposit your paychecks.
So during the process I need to donate to one of their partner organizations in order to join, right?

Yes, that is correct. https://www.dcu.org/infodesk/membership/participating-organizations.html
