I filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, which was discharged in June 2024. I’ve reviewed all three credit bureaus, and they are reporting everything correctly. However, when I try to do a prequalification with Capital One, I keep getting this message:
"Based on your Pre-Approval form information, there are too many delinquent past or present Capital One credit obligation(s)."
The strange thing is, I paid off all my Capital One credit cards in full before filing for bankruptcy, but Capital One still shows them as "Charged Off - Paid in Full" when I log into my account. My credit reports, however, list these accounts as "Discharged through bankruptcy."
I called Capital One, but they told me there’s nothing they can do and advised me to seek legal advice. Has anyone else encountered this? What should my next steps be?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
So you paid Cap1 but didn't include any of their accounts in your BK ?
Honestly Cap1 is probably the most forgiving creditor out for people with BKs, even people who burned them.
I think it's just too soon to get back in with them, but I'd bet you'll probably have success in a few more months.
Thanks for responding, pizzadude. Yes, I did include Capital One in my bankruptcy filing. I wanted to be thorough and ensure that I didn’t leave any creditors out, just in case they tried to collect later. So, even though I didn’t have an outstanding balance with them at the time, I still listed them.
The Capital One credit cards I had were small credit lines, so I’m surprised this is happening. From reading other people's posts, it seems like some folks had multiple Capital One cards with larger balances/limits and still got approved right away after bankruptcy. I guess it comes down to "YMMV" at the end of the day, but it’s frustrating not knowing why this is happening in my case.
Yeah it's for sure a YMMV situation so just keep trying back and I'm sure you'll get back in.
Alternately you could try opening a secured card if you don't have any revolving credit currently.

I wouldn't worry about what reason you get when you are getting denied at the pre-qualification page, especially since your CR's are reporting correctly.
When I filed my BK7, I ended up burning CapOne for somewhere in the neighborhood of $10K over a couple of different cards. During my rebuild, I was always checking the pre-approval tool and was getting denied like you are and it was frustrating because I was reading on here about people being let back in with them almost immediately. Then, one day somewhere around 10 months after my discharge, I finally got the pre-approved notice for a Platinum card. After having that card for a couple of months, I was able to PC it to a QS card and then I was also able to be pre-approved for both the Savor One card and later on the now discontinued Walmart Mastercard. And if you count the Kohl's store card, I had 4 different CapOne cards.
So, it's different for everyone, but they will eventually let you back in, especially since you didn't owe them anything at the time of your filing. So just keep checking their pre-approval tool and one day, probably sooner rather than later, you will get the message you are looking for.

Thank you MileHigh96 this is very encouraging. I'll continue to be patient and let things fall back into place. I truly appreciate you providing example of your experience. ![]()
I file 7/2023, discharged 10/2023.
I was discouraged with Capital One as well. I would check the pre approvel and get nothing.
They just approved me for a QS 2000 CL last week. So took about 10 to 11 months after discharge. Be patient and they will let you back in 😬
Also hubby was approved for the same exact card and CL
Thank you @
That's encouraging... I'll be patience... I know things will get better.
Hello,
I got the same message when applying soon after discharge. I had to actually wait 1 year before they would approve me for an account.
Yes, Do not give up on Capital One.
My BK7 was discharged June 2024. I discharged about 12k with capital one. I just got my Quick Silver World Elite MC today with a SL$3,000 with no AF....such a pretty card :-)....cant believe the approved me so soon!
I was getting the same message as you when I applied a month ago. I finally saw them show up on my Credit Karma as an option and decided to see if I was pre-approved...usually nothing shows up but I had some options like the Savor and Quick Silver show up...so I opted for that. Do Not Get their Patinum card you will be bucketed with your credit limit. I had the same limit on that card for years in the past.
I would keep checking on the pre-approval page and Credit Karma....this site helped me get two unsecured cards from Ally and Mission Lane with no af to start my journey.
Good Luck...hang in there!!
