Recently checked my Experian report and it shows a red mark for month of April with notes of "ch13 bankruptcy". I'm assuming the color red in a month is negative and a green is positive (ie you pay on time and it reflects green for that month).
My ch13 was discharged last month but is this normal for them to report it in this way? I called my loan serviced and the CSR said they reported it accurately but will send me a form to dispute.
I'm not entirely positive these two are related but my credit score dropped 36 points with no other changes to credit report. According to the information on Experian website I see no new alerts about a negative event on my report so I'm a little confused on what this all means if anything.
thanks for any insight.
Welcome @Ontime1010
Your credit score after a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy discharge will vary. Your new score will depend on how good or bad your credit score was prior to the filing of the Chapter 13 Bankruptcy. For most you can expect to see quite a dip in your overall credit score. This is a common result, when you have any type of bankruptcy attached to your credit report.
Welcome! And congrats on your discharge. It sounds like your BK isn't reporting accurately, since it should show up on the date of filing with a note about date of discharge, and NOT on the date of discharge. It may take up to 2 months for your credit reports to become accurate. Might take longer as the CRAs are probably more busy than usual with the pandemic situation.
My BK13 was discharged at the end of Nov, and my student loans didn't correctly report at all CRAs until mid-January. That's because my loans report at the end of the month, so for December they reported current, and the CRAs updated that status for January. Until then, my scores were in flux and generally very low. I probably should have waited, but I did send disputes after the 1 month mark. That resulted in one inaccurate update to say that my BK13 was FILED in the month that it got discharged. Finally got corrected when they received the update from the loan servicer. So I'm not sure disputing made any difference.
Depending on when your student loans report, I would advise waiting longer, possibly until the end of this month for the dust to settle. Then you could consider disputing if it continues to report inaccurately.
