Finally received our discharge last month. It’s been a long almost 5-year journey filled with uncertainty but also a lot of growth. It taught us how to budget, how to be creative, and how to live within our means. I’m sharing this in hopes it helps someone else going through something similar.
Filing Chapter 13 was one of the best decisions we made. Yes, it sucked at times, especially the tiered payment plan, but it gave us structure and helped us regain control. It’s a long road, but there is light at the end.
About a year into the plan, after 12 months of on-time payments, we were able to get a mortgage. I actually shared the details in a previous post if you’re curious—check my profile.
6 months before finalizing the payment plan, we got a secured Navy Federal card with a $200 limit. That later increased to $600, though it still hasn’t graduated. It’s been 7 months now, and we’ve always paid in full. We also got a Bread card with a $6,100 limit, which we also pay in full every month. That one came with a $200 bonus after spending $1,000 in 90 days.
Fast forward to today, one month after discharge, I applied for the Venture X and was approved for $20,000.
To anyone going through this, keep grinding. The road is tough, but it teaches you a lot, especially about budgeting and resilience. There is a recovery path, and the future really can be bright. Appreciate all the advice and support along the way.
