Hi guys
just got discharged on the 8th.
I'm trying to rebuild but I've burned so many bridges
C1
Discovery
Synchrony
TD -Target
Citi- BestBuy
Wells
USAA
i tried to see if I prequalified for Credit One but I had them when I was a dumb teenager and burned them and haven't had them for more than 10 years but they said they couldn't approve my pre approval. Should I pull the trigger and see? I don't want any (more) negatives right now.
thank you
First congrats on the discharge! Secondly are all your credit reports, reporting correctly ? Showing IIB and 0 balances ? I would not cold app for a credit one personally. There is other cards out there to try, mission lane, ollo, merrick etc, most have prequals as well, also could go with a secured like opensky it is no hard pull and use that for say 6 months then try some prequals. Capital one seems to be a bit forgiving depending on the amount burned for.
Rebuilding is a marathon and better cards will come as you attain and manage your new credit better.
First of, congrats on your discharge.
Remember, credit rebuilding (even after a BK) is a marathon, not a race.
With regards to your credit, I'd recommend confirming (via membership on myfico.com or otherwise) that all your accounts are being reported correctly ($0 balance and included-in-bankruptcy) as well as your BK reporting discharged.
Now, onto the good stuff. Do you have/qualify for membership with NFCU, PenFed, any other credit unions? If so, NFCU, for example, has a GREAT secured card you can do for as little as $200 and usually graduates to unsecured with typically a $2,000 credit line after 6 months. For optimal scores, you'll want 3 or more credit cards. Although it can make it a slower process, I prefer to do this with $0 annual fee cards. If your charge off or including in BK with Cap1 was 12+ months ago, check their prequalify tool and go with either the secured or preferably the Platinum card $0 annual fee and requested a PC (product change) to the Quicksilver (no annual fee version) after 3-4 statements have generated.
You also, for optimal score, need 1 installment loan. Assuming you don't have a mortgage/car loan, etc you carried thru and reaffirmed, then this will be vital for scores. There are several you can do with any of the following: NFCU SSL, local credit union, self.com, kikoff.com and many more. My preference (if you don't have substantial savings) is kikoff.com...with them they verify your identity, loan you $12 and you repay @ $1/month for 12 months. No interest. No fees. That simple. If, however, you have $1,001+ (and have NFCU membership) I'd go with a longer SSL from NFCU then immediately pay down to 8.9% (or less) of the original loan. They'll return to your savings account the amount you just repaid, so it's like only getting the loan for 8.9% of the amount and it's a longer term loan which will help more in the long run...This is not speaking bad about kikoff.com since it's a great option...just only 12 months vs the 18-60 months you could get with NFCU.
Target might let you back in sooner than some other creditors.
Discover is hit and miss with most people. The great thing about Discover is you can do a soft-pull prequalify...if you get an offer with a firm rate vs a rate range, it's likely a good indicator.
CreditOne, Ollo (via credit karma or direct mail), Mission Lane, Merrick Bank, etc are popular amongst recent BK consumers.
There are countless posts here about this process and many people who've gone through what you're going through right now. Most of us have GREAT advice and truly want to help. Disregard the naysayers and trash talkers.
There is a common thread(s) called/referred to as 24 months to 700...or some variation.
Do your research, be patient, don't get too many inquiries, try to stay away from annual fees if possible, and REMEMBER...This is a marathon, not a race.
Best of luck in your rebuild!
