I just wanted to post in the hopes that I encourage anybody still struggling through their BK. I filed July of 2013. Paid everything off October of 2017, and received my discharge 1/9/2018. Towards the end of my BK back in the summer I opened 2 secured cards. Discover for 300 and OpenSky for $200. I raised both limits to $500 in November. Discover changed the secured to unsecured and raised the limit last month. I used them keeping my utilization under 10% and paying the balance in full after the due date but before the next statement date. That gave my scores the biggest boost. I then did the SCT and got a Wayfair, Overstock, and Runway card. I haven't spent more than $75 on any of these and the limits are $2500, $1000, and $1000 respectively. I used them not to get stuff but to show payment history and increase my utilization. Once I was discharged I purchased a car and traded in the car that was IIB. I also checked the pre-approvals and was surprised that I had one for Cap One and Discover. I accepted both and both have an 0% APR for at least 12 months. I didn't start checking my scores until August of last year but they have risen from 640 to 670, 571 to 660, and 608 to 642. I created a spreadsheet with my accounts, limits, balances, due dates, and statement dates and then I logged in and set each one to auto-pay so I could never be late again. When I get the email that the payment has been made I go back in and make sure I pay the balance to zero. Credit takes work. I now have 7 accounts, but I really only use 2. Once a year I'll buy something from the others just to keep them open. Also post BK the account included like FedLoan changed the reporting status to current which improved my score (Experian only) Get a hold of all of your reports and go over them like you're having a final exam. There are probably errors that need to be corrected. Good luck to you all!
Congratulations to you! It really takes discipline to recover and do it right. I am also a Chapter 13 survivor. I learned many lessons that I use every day. I am sure you do, too.
Best of luck on your continuing journey.
Awesome progress! Congrats!
Yeah I am going thru the samething, discharged in Jan. Trying to rebuild, currently in the lower 600s.
Good going!
Congrats!! I'm currently in the 2nd year of my 5 year plan. I'll definitely look to make moves as I get closer to the light at the end of the tunnel. This thread serves as motivation.
Congratulations to you and thanks for the motivation. I have a long way to go (54 months) as my Chap 13 was just confirmed 2/15. All I know for sure is after this 5yr plan I will never make the credit mistakes I made in the past!!! Chap 13 is hard and it's always something that comes up unexpected but I try to keep my head low and make my payments on time and hope this passes quickly!!
You will learn how to save for sure. I purchased a new car lately and the money that I was already not seeing because it was payroll deducted for my trustee payment is going to pay my note. I feel relieved and a little scared because I was able to save a little in my rainy day fund and I don't to lose it. Make auto-pay your best friend because one late payment can make you lose 30-50 points on your credit score.
This is awesome! I was discharged in August 2017 but waited to start rebuilding. I was told that I couldn't obtain any new credit while in Ch13 but I see so many others who didn't have this same restriction. I applied for a Credit One card in Dec and activated it in January. It just reported in Feb and my Experian score went up 37 points. I opened up a self-lender account on the same day that I activated my credit one card but it hasn't reported yet. Hoping that it will soon. Last week I did the SCT and got a Wayfair card but I read somewhere that I shouldn't have done it because it would negatively impact the age of my credit. SO currently I have a Fedloan, Credit one card, and a Wayfair card. I'm going to see if I can apply for another card in about June. Trying to decide if I will do PenFed or follow the rebuilding plan I got from here. My brother is also going to add me as an authorized user on his cards so I can take advantage of his AMAZING credit score. My plan is to apply for a car loan later in the year.
Penfed will do loans and credit cards even if you are not discharged from 13. They are only concerned with your score.
