Looking for suggestions on what to do next

Hello everyone!

So I found this place while doing some searching on repairing ones credit post bankruptcy, and it seems there are a LOT of knowledgeable and helpful people on here so I'm hoping you can tell me what to do next.

A snapshot of my current situation:

- I just received my chapter 7 bankruptcy discharged on 9-19-15. It was a combination of credit card debts: Old Capital One, Discover cards w/ judgements against me, a few past due medical bills, and some recent cards that I had to include from CreditOneBank, and Walmart.

- Currently, the only bills that should still be showing on my credit report are my student loans, which are all current, and no late or missed payments

- I tried re-applying for a unsecured card @ Capital One, Credit One, and my PSECU credit union 5 days ago.  I was denied for all 3.  I burned Capital One and Credit One in my bankruptcy so I wasn't surprised I got denied, even though some people here had said they had gotten cards post bankruptcy no problem.  The denial from the unsecured card at PSECU said my credit score from Experian was reported to them as 614, and the reason for the denial was:  the applicant has filed for bankruptcy.  The denial from Captial One states: "there are too many delinquent past or present Capital One credit obligations".  I didnt get a letter yet stating why I was denied from CreditOne

I applied for all 3 cards in the same day so hopefully they can show up as 1 hard pull on my score.  My credit union (PSECU) has an option for a secured card, with no credit check required, but I don't know if thats the best option for me to go with.

I started ordering copies of my 3 credit reports as we speak to make sure everything that should have been removed in the bankruptcy was removed, When I went to order a free copy from Experience, due to my denial of credit, they said they didn't even see an inquiry for credit made within the past 60 days, and won't issue a free credit report to me at this time.

I guess my main questions are:

1) Should I wait to request a copy of the credit report since my bankruptcy was JUST discharged, will it even show on the reports yet?  I just would hate to waste $$ ordering them, only to find the bankruptcy wasn't updated on them yet. Will the 3 cards I applied for not show on the reports until next month, or even later?

2) Are there are some other "lower tier" unsecured cards people might recommend I try?  Or should I just wait a few months, and then re-apply?

3) Any other suggestions on where I should go from here?

Sorry for the long post, I just hate procrastinating on things, and would appreciate any advice you all could give

Re: Looking for suggestions on what to do next

Congratulations on your very recent discharge from Bk.

I would say the number one thing to do is to check your credit reports. You can check them with www.annualcreditreport.com - get all three reports. That is the best way to see your actual status.

I noticed you reference the accounts as "being removed".  They won't be removed from your credit report. They are supposed to show iib and zero balance. It is common for some creditors to not properly code the tradeline as "included in bankruptcy" and forget to zero out your balance. That could be why you were turned down as you applied immediately after your discharge. Some creditors take longer than others to report correctly. Others need prodding by you to report correctly.

Check every tradeline. Make sure it reports correctly before applying for any more credit.

Definitely check your reports. I started with a secured card from OpenSky. They don't pull credit at all and have only a $29 fee and a minimum $200 to open the card. They have worked well for me as they report very quickly to the credit bureaus. Before applying for a lot of cards blindly, make sure you check the different prequalify sites, especially with CapitalOne. We burned them too, but they let us in a few months post discharge.

Good luck!

Re: Looking for suggestions on what to do next

Congrats on your recent discharge.  However, go over your reports with a fine tooth comb.  It took me about 4 months to get back in with Capital One.  I did some rebuilding in that process.  I opened up a secured card with the Credit Union I joined, obtained a Fingerhut account and opened up an Express store account.

Thank you for the wealth of knowledge I have learned from these forums. I am logging off as of November 9, 2022. I wish everyone great success.
