Rebuilding credit after bankruptcy

I have a question I am new to the forum. I filed for bankruptcy and my bankruptcy was discharged two months ago. I was Very nervous but I check to see if I was prequalified for a capital one . It gave me 3 different choices for their cards. The Savor, Quicksilver and their classic. Now is this really possible so close after my bankruptcy being discharged? I'm trying to figure out if I should submit an application or wait a couple more months?  My score for trans union is only 575 and 555 for equifax. Not sure about experian.
please help just looking for some advice . Thank you .

Re: Rebuilding credit after bankruptcy

@MalibuKrissy This is a good question. Within a week of my discharge I confirmed the Chapter 7 BK was reflecting as discharged on my credit reports with all three bureaus. I also verified that the remaining items listed on my reports were accurate before I applied for my first credit card subsequent to the discharge.  During the first week post discharge I applied for the Capital One QS card and was approved for a starting CL of $1000. My credit score was in the 600s at the time. I'd recommend reviewing your credit reports to verify its' accuracy to ensure your score is reflective therefore affording you the best opportunity for approval along with a decent starting CL.

Re: Rebuilding credit after bankruptcy

I filed Chapter 13 in 2017 and got my DC in January 2021. My experience may be a bit different than some because it all kinda fell into p

place but here goes. I did do LOTS of reading on the best approach so you are doing the right thing.

2 days after DC, I received an invite via Credit Sesame for an OLLO Rewards MC. Instant approval for 2.5K. GOOD rebuild card that doesn't make you feel subprime. A day later, I used the Cap One prequel and ended up with a Cap One Platinum with a 3K CL. No rewards but I knew it was temporary.

I did more reading and the following month, I applied for the Jasper Rewards MC (it's been discontinued). Quick approval for 5K. They were a new card comoany eager to get their cards into people's hands.

The month after that, I applied for a BoA secured card. Approved and I funded it for 5K, to which I added later. This was my big break, IMHO. I had a really good relationship with BoA so I'm sure that helped.

A week later, I applied for the TD Secured card; was approved and funded the account with 1.5K.

BOTH cards graduated in about 8 months.

Offers for rebuilders came flooding in. I threw out all the Credit One; Best Egg; Aspire invites.

A month later, I received a pre-approval for a Mercury MC. I pulled the trigger and was approved for 2.5K. A few weeks later, I received a pre-approval for a Merrick Double-your-line Visa. Approved for 1K and doubled to 2K in 6 months.

I slowed down. Backed off. And PIF each month. 5 months later, I was approved for the Cap One Walmart MC at 2K.

I sat on those for a few months. The BoA and TD graduated.

Fast forward 6 months to this past Spring, and let my (by now) good scores and low utilization work for me. I did research and began applying cautiously at first. Amex Gold was my first approval once I hit 5 years and 1 month since my filing.

Join a credit union and take out a small share secured loan to pump up your score. Do some research into secured cards offered by major banks, credit unions and do some research into which ones graduate. Skip the ones who don't.

Good luck. You can do it. Don't judge yourself by others' progress. Keep your utilization low. And take baby steps.

Re: Rebuilding credit after bankruptcy

Welcome @MalibuKrissy

Congrats on your DC. If you go for any cards out of the three. QS. Savor wont happen. It will be a bucket card. But its the revolving credit you want to build up to 3 cards and a loan to get the post BK FICO bonus. You listed the 2 CRA's that are from CK. Is this true? You can get your free EX FICO score for free.

Re: Rebuilding credit after bankruptcy

Hi, just wanted to say thank you for everyone's  advice.  I was able to get my FICO score for Experian and look at my credit reports and compare them to make sure they say the same thing and they all do.  My FICO score for Experian is only 508. I am praying it will go up more soon.  I'm just still on the fence about whether or not its too early to actually submit a credit card app. I want to make sure  I do everything right this time. Looking on credit Sesame today it reflected that I had a good chance to be approved for the capital one platinum.  I'm just nervous because fear of a credit denial!!

Re: Rebuilding credit after bankruptcy

So I did get my Experian FICO score and it was lower than I thought it would be but I did just do a bankruptcy.  It was 508.  I guess I am just nervous about applying for a credit card and getting a denial because then that would be a hard inquiry. Just still unsure of actually pressing that submit button.  Alright I am going to give this some more thought, but Thank you.

Re: Rebuilding credit after bankruptcy

Cap1 is very forgiving. Go to their per-qual site again and go for the Plat. In a few months you can try to upgrade to the QS. After that you can try Mission Lane once scres go up a bit more. Its step by step. Your really fresh out of BK. Lets us know what happens please. Good Luck!

Re: Rebuilding credit after bankruptcy

Congrats on your discharge.

I can say on the day of my discharge I was approved for Mission Lane and Credit One.   YMMV

Thank you for the wealth of knowledge I have learned from these forums. I am logging off as of November 9, 2022. I wish everyone great success.

Re: Rebuilding credit after bankruptcy

Thank you so much for your advice.  I think i am gonna wait at least another full month too see if my scores go up a bit more.  My scores being in the 500s makes me nervous to apply for anything after Bankruptcy.
