how many payments on new CC need to report ?

Son is filing BK .. wanting to get a head start in getting him back on solid ground to finance his truck.  Long story short, divorce, court order to get wife off truck, bank wont touch due to knowing he is filing bk .. we financed truck in our name, short term till discharged. CU will finance once discharged. He has no CC in his in name ..(all being included). I am adding him as AU to our cards now. IF he was to apply for a secured card now.. would it still count as to new of a account in say 6mo to be of any help once the bk is discharged?

Re: how many payments on new CC need to report ?

I would not apply for any credit even a secured card till he is officially discharged. There will be a few folks here who will come back and say, " as soon as I filed, I got a card and my attorney said it was ok".

I would not listen to that. Just because the BK is "filed", doesn't mean your son is out of the clear. He still needs to get thru the 341 meeting, and his trustees still need to sign off on his bk, and give him the official DC. Lots of things could go wrong between now and then, and its happened before. I wouldn't chance it.

Getting a secured card now vs in 2-3 months once DC'ed isn't going to make a difference in regards to his re-build. Besides, most lenders won't even give you a secured card until the CRA show "Discharged" on the reports.

You can add him as an AU now if you want because he isn't responsible for that debt, but I would wait until his DC for him to get a card in his name only. Just my thoughts/opinion.
