Good Morning ALL
I am new to the forum, although I am an unoffical lurker for about a year, and signed up a week ago.
I am rebuilding what has been an irresponsible and disastrous first decade of credit history.
This explanation will be lengthy but in my experience, the more info you all have, the eaiser it is to give advice and recommendations.
December 2016 had me at a 382 TU and 410 EQ, and as of today, I have a 619 TU and 611 Equifax Credit score via CreditKarma, from reading here, I know that these points are usually 20 - 100 points to the real deal. (Right?!)
About 4months ago I started monitoring my score the the new Discover tool, that started at a 601and as of November 2017 it is 656. Not sure who they use.
At this point in time, my newest Credit Card is a CAP1 QS,(July 2017) with a CL of 400, and I am due for my credit steps increase December 19, when my 6th statement cuts. It is reporting 0 balance.
My only other card is the measly CAP1 Platinum, CL of 300, current balance sitting at 212, will be paying this down to less than 9 % at time of Jan 2 Statement cut. I have not worked on this as I should've. (Current 1 year)
I have had an auto loan since December 2016, which is reporting current/never late. (1 Year)
Deferred Student Loans. Which report current for 1 year.
And lastly two baddies on TU, which are PayDay loans from 2012. 3 Baddies on EQ, (SAME AS TU) and a medical collection which I am disputing due to not being mine.
Inquires are reporting TU = 3 / EQ = 4 / EX = 11 (Car loan inq Dec 2016)
Now to the questions, for the past 6 months I have been flooded with AMEX Preapprovals, for the past 2 months I've gone on AMEX website and DING DING DING, finally showed the " Congrats, you're Prequalified for the 2 Cards" BLUE CASH EVERYDAY and AMEX Everyday Credit Card, I have also received new Offers via Mail this week.
I also went to DISCOVER site which had NEVER showed me any PreQuals, and within the past month Showed I am PREQUALED for the DISCOVER CHROME and DISCOVER IT.
CreditKarma now also has my approval at Fair Approval for AMEX.
I am trying to wait until my CAP 1 reflects usuage of under 10% January 2, and I hopefully get AUTO CLI with QS.
What are my chances? I'll probably app for DISCOVERIT, but the amex? Should I do both same day? Which one first?
IF you've hung in there and have stomached all my junk, I thank you. And any and all responses are appreciated.
You have all been a key to the 200+ Credit Score improve this past year so THANK YOU.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
PS after January I will be back in Garden.

You could probably get a BCE and a Discover, but they would be low limit/slow grow, no bonus, no intro APR. Get rid of your baddies as much as you can and get another year of good on time payments behind you. Then you will get some decent offers.

I agree with the aforementioned. Get rid of the negative items at all costs. It shouldn't necessarily take a year to do this. With strong effort, it may take 2 to 3 months to clean up your credit from inaccuracies, tops. If you need help, enlist an attorney that specializes in this.
Once you do that, you'll find that your score will increase at least 35 to 70 points, in which case, you will get markedly more solid relationships to build from, with your account openings.
Conversely, if you open accounts with negatives on your credit, those creditors will likely always be suspicious of you, and keep your limits affixed accordingly.

A lot of us has rebuilt from past mistakes. Taking a methodical approach, like you are now, will help a lot.
First off, like other posters said, take Credit Karma with a grain of salt.
It sounds like your are doing your research. You need to decide which reward works better for you - cash back of membership rewards. Typically prequels on Discover and AmEx are solid if you are seeing a single or small range APR offer.
You are also on the cuspid of finishing up your credit steps. I wouldn’t app until you finish it and get your CLI and it’s reporting.
FWIW, I apped Discover at the stage where you are at. It was a nice SL. When I apped AmEx, I first went with EDC, but was placed back onto their version of steps. I allowed everything to age another month. My scores went up significantly and I apped BCE and received a better SL and no steps. YMMV

For a lot of people, spree + gardening is damaging. You'll have to mange it well or it will stress your credit. I would not recommend folks do it, particularly the folks who have fragile redit history. Better go slow and harvest while you go...

I wouldn’t pay a single bit of attention to CreditKarma. Good tool to use to see report changes and actual reports. The scores they have are worthless and the approval odds are based on either amount of people that applied or advertising money. They have no clue what the lenders are actually looking for.
Try CCT trial or American Express Credit Secure. Both $1 trials. Amex is probably easier to cancel though. Both allow you to see all 3 FICO 8 scores.
Discover Credit Score card gives you FICO 8 through Experian.
But Amex Prequalified is normally very accurate. And since your getting mailers from them. I would say you will get approved
Discover prequalified is a bit less accurate. From what I’ve seen on here. It’s more of a recommended thing then pre approval but it’s much better if you get a set APR instead of a range. Other members will have more on this.
Welcome to the forums.
I had no idea AMEX offered this. Whoo hoo! I'm signed up!
