When you run the pre-qual, it only shows 3 cards. But if you click on "all cards" there might be more pre-quals listed there? More experienced folks may chime in and correct me if I am wrong?
+1
I absolutely agree! Only 3 cards come up initially on the "prequalified offers", but that may not be all the cards you are prequalified for!
You need to click on "view all cards" and vlick through each to see if which ones show "pre-qualified offer".
I run the pre-qual on Amex for my SO every now and again, and his EX Fico 8 just went to 691, so I ran the pre-qual to see what it offered. I was shocked to see that all cards showed "pre-qualified offer", including the BCP! Prior to hitting 690, my SO did not get prequalified for any of the core cards (except one time it did come up with the ED cards, too) - only the charge cards and the co-branded cards (minus the Marriot Bonvoy) were what showed prequaligied offers.
We considered apping, but decided to hold off until one of his 2 charge offs ages off EX in a couple weeks. Otherwise, for EX he has no collection accounts and the only lates he have are on the one remaining charge off. It is unpaid and over 5 years old. So, even though all cards, including all the Amex core cards like BCP, show "prequalified", I still feel like it would be a borderline approval, like 690 may be around the point core cards open up as a possibilty. Of course, YMMV, and every profile is different, so different results will happen.
I also believe there is legally a minimum credit line based off the annual fee. Like they cannot charge you a $550 AF and give you a $1k credit limit. I cannot remember off the top of my head, but maybe someone here will know what I am talking about or a quick search of the forum may yield the answer. I thought the CL had to be at least 4 times the AF. I totally could be wrong, though! Given that, since the BCP only has like a $95 AF, I would guess a $1k CL would be likely. While Amex does accept dirty files/lower scores, if they give you a $1k CL, it seems likely you will be denied CLIs until your credit reports are clean. You can always cycle the limit, if that is not an issue for you. Not to say it will definitely happen, just a heads up!
Good luck!
Edit: found one discussion about the CL vs AF:
The recommendations that are shown on CK are advertising just that. For example CK shows that I am approved for US Altitude go card which I already have and also indicates that I could be approved for AMEX cards, which I am on the AMex black list. I have tried in the lastcouple of weeks for the AMEX blue cash creditcard was denied for past history. Take CK's recommendations with grain of salt. Honestly you need a good foundation before applying to AMEX and getting good results this means bunch of cards with lines of credit over 5K. If you have charge off's showing that will hold you back. Good luck.
