AMEX’s “Get a decision in less than 30 seconds”

Hi everyone,

I was checking my prequalify card page on Amex's site and though, I don't have any prequals I checked through each card's details and conditions. On the Amex Gold Card app page, the header said "Get a decision in less than 30 seconds." I was under the impression that mean instant approval but I got denial. Bummer. Can anyone explain the difference between receiving that header vs "Expand your your membership" offer. Thanks

The two bolded items are in different places. The first one doesn't eliminate the second. You probably had both.

This.

"Get a decision in less than 30 seconds" is from the page you click through to get to the application page.

The application page will either have a banner with "Rikapov315, you're preapproved!" or the "Expand your membership" banner.

"Expand your membership" doesn't necessarily mean an impending denial but it does mean that for whatever reason(s) your odds of approval aren't high enough to be considered a preapproval.

This is an informative statement, like "take your driver's license test here," telling you you'll get a decision quickly--it doesn't say what KIND of decision. Just like my example doesn't mean you'll PASS your DL test, just that you go there to TAKE it.
