American Express prequal question

I have a question about Amerian Express prequals on their site.  I recently put in my information and got special offers for amex ED and Delta.  I've done some reading on here and from what I've read the prequals are fairly solid.

What I'm wondering is how solid.  I know nothing is guarenteed, so just curious.  I actually had a amex co that I paid in July.  So pretty recent.  My EX score is 687, I have 7 ( 1 in last 6 months)  inquiries but about 12 new accounts this year.  Util is about 18%.  I do have several baddies from 4 years ago (all paid but one).  No lates since that time.  I had planned to wait about a year to let things age.  But the prequal has me wondering.  Any advice or suggestions are welcome.

They did change their pre-quals so if you get a personalized pre-qual you should be good to go but watch for the recommend offers as they are not definite

Got another question?  What is the difference between a welcome offer and a special offer.  I entered fiancee's info in and got 2 welcome offers.  When I did mine, they were listed as special offers.

Re: American Express prequal question

For me, Amex was pretty straight up regarding pre approval. I was preapproved for all their charge cards , and I applied for the PRG and was approved. It will say pre approved on top in red, if you are preapproved for their cards. Also at the time when I applied, I had a 5 year old judgement and a 1 collection. So I think you should be good. Hope this helps.

Re: American Express prequal question

Honestly with all was said. Its just a roll of the Dice. I got pre approvals as well which i have no negatives. but a lot of accounts. tried for the ED. Even with pre approval Denied. so basically its only one way to find out. Apply. You already know  nothing is guranteed. Since you are already a Amex cardmember. You have nothing to lose. If it is denied. it will just be Softpull anyway. If approved. Then HP. but im not sure if you are still Card member as you Paid off Co recently. This is what can help you. Good luck.

Can't argue with that logic, Taxi.  I have no real need for an amex card right now and I'm pretty sure they would give me a small limit even if approved.  So I think I just need to keep telling myself.  "WAIT A LITTLE LONGER" "WAIT A LITTLE LONGER" "WAIT A LITTLE LONGER"

it's just one of those prestige things, An American Express card would give me some validity that all my hard work to climb back up the fico tables has worked.

Do you already have an Amex card or had one in the past, and does your fiance have no history with Amex?

Re: American Express prequal question

I would say that you are probably good on the Delta Card. I was just approved for it 1 week ago with around 8 inquiries and 11 new accounts this year - credit score of 709. They only gave me a 2k credit line but I really just wanted the card for free bags and boarding Smiley Happy
