Quick question. A friend of mine applied for 2 amex cards in one night, a charge and a revolver. He was denied the charge and the revolver app was cancelled. Reason stated for the cancelled app was it's Amex policy to not approve an app after a recent denial. My question is, is that a canned response for every cancellation, or is it saying he would have been approved if it wasn't for the earlier denial?

Brian, you have to wait 30 days to apply again after a denial so the reasoning says nothing about the probability of 2nd app, they probably didn't even look at the 2nd app. That said, Amex charge cards are said to have easier UW than revolvers, if he was denied the charge card, I wouldn't bet the farm on the revolver app.
Actually, I put in an app a while back to see if I was still on the blacklist. I wasn't and was denied. Being curious, I apped for the Delta 11 days later as it's supposed to be the most lenient underwriting. I didn't know about the 30 day wait. The app wasn't canceled and there was no mention of 30 days or a previous denial. It was denied of course because my credit was worse than it is now, but there was an HP and the app was processed.
As for my friend, he doesn't care. I don't know why he applied because his credit is worse than mine and he knows it. He showed me the cancellation and I'd never heard or seen it before so I made the thread. Mainly because I would be severely ticked off if he was gonna be approved and I wouldn't.

I've applied a few weeks after and got denied, but not cancelled. I don't know how set in stone that auto-cancel is. I've heard people say the 30 day rule with Amex. At the time when I was applying I didn't know about it.
After I was approved for my AMEX Green I was trying to snatch a Delta AMEX Gold and an Everyday Card. Was shut down on both, but applied about 2 1/2 weeks apart. I didn't get get an auto cancel, got denied.
