Amex CLI Denial(multiple) - Approval for new Amex card

Hi all!

I opened an Amex Everyday preferred card a little over 2 years ago with a 640 score. SL $1000 - I've used this card heavily and paid in full most months.

Every opportunity I've had I've requested a CLI on this card - resulting in a denial.

My scores and utilization are in a much better place these days, 760 eq / 759 tu / 741 ex and roughly 10-14% utilization.

My last attempt a month ago for a CLI, denied - but I took a shot at applying for a new card with Amex, approved with a soft pull for a Blue Cash Everyday SL $8000.

Any tips on getting my starter Amex card limit increased?

Re: Amex CLI Denial(multiple) - Approval for new Amex card

I hear tell of a method in waiting every 6 months before applying for CLI.

Now some of my personal experiences, I've always tried to make sure my DTI was around 50% when applying for CLI's. I've noticed a strange correlation in having balances. I assumed they believed I needed more money to increase that balance (i.e. pay more interest, etc).

In farming, I hold a balance on a card with the lowest IR. At the same time I have 2 drivers, work and personal, that I pay off every month. I then keep everything else on zero, rotating them all as personal in monthly intervals. I also apply  for increases every 6 months on all of them. I don't track them each individually.

With this method i've gotten most of my increases or a counter-increase. I have been denied a few times but not in an alarming way

FICOs: EQ - 730 / TU - 735 / EX - 736
WALLET: CL 70K / UT 1%

what's the denial reason for the CLI?

you'll be able to move some BCE limit over to the other card in about a month to help with the low limit, utilziation

Re: Amex CLI Denial(multiple) - Approval for new Amex card

As mentioned above at some point you should be able to reallocate limit yourself online although AMEX may choose to follow their normal practice of requiring the donor card to be open 12 months before allowing it.

It's common for AMEX cards with a $1000 SL to be initially slow to grow but once they start they can grow well and the hard part is getting that 1st CLI.   Roughly put a $1000 starting limit means your profile wasn't quite compelling enough at the time for AMEX to comfortably approve but they were willing to see for themselves how well you could do. Insofar as the bigger picture goes you got a much better starting limit with your 2nd card which infers that in AMEX' eyes you're on the right path.

Congratulations on the new card, and good SL!  Quick question - did you know that you were preapproved prior to applying for the BCE?  I want to add the Platinum Card to my portfolio, but only want to take the hard pull when I know I'm preapproved.

1. I'm guessing your next CLI application will have a more favorable outcome.

2. If you want to increase your CL in the short run you can easily move some of the limit on the new card to the old one, as soon as they have it populated on the site.

Yes, I was able to pre-qual online for this card and AMEX Gold (which is still on my radar, I just can't justify an AF card at the moment) I called in to customer service to confirm the pre approval before proceeding.

They also informed me I would have the opportunity to reject the offer if I did not like the terms APR/Limit.

I did not receive a hard pull for accepting.

Had to go dig out the letter.

The ratio of revolving account balances to their credit limits is too high (Odd as I was at $9000 reporting with 192k in available credit)

The ratio of loan balances to the loan amounts is too high. (This is fair, I do have 16k in personal loans open that will be paid off in the next 5ish  months)

There are too many credit inquiries on your report (experian) in the last 12 months (Also fair, I took a few hits for those loan apps)

Just felt it was odd they approved me for a new card completely, rather than increasing the existing card limit.

I'll try again in 6mo on this one after the loan's are paid off and some hp's drop, I also added  an additional 46k to my available credit this month between some new cards and CLI's.
