From experience, is one or the other easier to be approved for?
I really want the Platinum card due to the travel benefits, but I would be willing to start with the Gold and upgrade later on if the approval odds were better.

I assume they're the same.
if anything, the Plat is probably easier to be approved for because of the higher AF
there is text in the Gold bonus offer which may disqualify you from getting a bonus for the Gold card if you get the Platinum first, so if you think you want both, you might consider getting the gold first and then the Plat, but if you just want the Plat, find a high offer and apply, there's no HP if you're denied

Agree with the post above, from what I've seen reported AMEX's charge cards Gold / Platinum / Green generally have similar and also lower approval requirements than their revolver cards.

I think I'm going to wait about 30 days to ensure my updated credit information is being used by Amex, and then might give it a shot for the Platinum card! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
How often can you apply if you're denied? Every 30 days or every 90 days?
I agree with @GZG that the underwriting requirements are about the same, and that the platinum is slightly easier to get than the gold.

I would think they are the same.
Plat is not really an upgrade just different benefits.
It shoul be an upgrade, but it isn't.
It should have all benefits of gold plus more.
They offer me upgrades all the time but I don't travel much.
If plat had gold benefits as well, I Would upgrade...
GL!
