Amex New App Credit Pull

It's my understanding that as a current Amex member, if I app for another Amex card, it'll be a SP if declined and a HP if approved.  Fine. The last SP they did was on 1/17/2018.

Question 1: Will they use the same SP (1/17/2018) or will the do another one at the time of the new application?

Question 2: If the new Amex app it's approved, they do a new HP; will they then use that most recent HP for my 90 Day CLI request?

Question 3: I've read that if you apply for a card other than Amex, that they will initiate a SP on your report, is that true?

I was denied a CLI 3 months ago and I want to try again but I want to make sure they use the most recent reports

Re: Amex New App Credit Pull

I'm not sure of the time frame from becoming a member, to when the SP for new apps start.
They will use a SP to approve CCs for current established members. And you may not get a HP at all.
I've had 6 Amex cards total and 3 HPs total the entire time I've been a customer since 2015. That includes 6 or 7 request for CLIs.
It's also possible to get a new CC and get a CLI on another card that has made the 180 days.
They soft pull you monthly, so I'd assume they'll use the last one made.
There's a large thread in the forums about Amex. You might want to check it out.

Re: Amex New App Credit Pull

In my personal experience.

I got HP for my first app with approval. This is the only inquiry I have received from AMEX.

Months later,  I opened 2 more accounts with AMEX and they did not HP me.

CLI are ONLY available every 6 months or 180 days. If you were within that timeframe you would have been auto-denied. Otherwise youre relationship with AMEX is not solid enough yet.

Re: Amex New App Credit Pull

Whether you get a HP or SP is very much YMMV.  Sometimes they HP and sometimes they don't.  I still haven't found a reliable pattern that can be used to predict that.

For my experience, I've gotten 6 new cards from Amex in the last year or so.  I only got a HP for the first one.  Every one since has been SP.

However, I've also seen where people got HP for each new app, sometimes even for denials.

I'd say be prepared to get a HP, and to be pleasantly surprised if you don't.

Re: Amex New App Credit Pull

Sharing my experience, I have 3 Amex cards. EveryDay, Blue Cash EveryDay, and Delta Gold. They HP'd me for the EveryDay and the other two were offers on the website that said "(My name), YOU'RE PRE-APPROVED" and both of them were soft pull approvals. I think this is a significant data point.

Re: Amex New App Credit Pull

I think if the website says you're pre-approved for the card it might just be a SP from Amex. I applied for my second Amex card back in October and before I applied I was pre-approved for some of their cards. I applied for the BCE since it said I was pre-approved and was eventually approved after I called in and answered some of the verification questions. I had to call cause I added a fraud alert to my reports after the Equifax fiasco. But it was only a SP for me in the end.
