Amex Plat Offer. Just when I get out.....

Using a line from the Godfather, "Just when I get out, they pull me back in."

So, I got an American Express Platinum offer in the mail. I just PC'd down from Platinum to Green last year and then cut the Amex charge card cord a few months ago. So, here's my question. For those in a situation like this, has Amex waived the AF for the first year?

I got rid of Amex Plat and went with Citi Prestige because Amex Plat was getting killed by the competition. To be honest the only thing that is keeping the Prestige in my wallet is the fourth night free and $250 airline credit. I'll be very honest, if Amex Platinum had a fourth or third might free on a consistent basis for ANY hotel. I'm sold. That's really the only difference that's keeping me from going back. I'll revisit any changes they have made recently. But right now I'm not sure if I should pass the offer up.

Also, people mentioned that Amex only gives out bonuses once in a lifetime. The offer is 50k points if I spend $5000 in 3 months. That ain't happening anyway.

I'm on the fence about my platinum too when the time comes to pay the AF. The top benefits for me are the $200 credit, the centurion lounges, and the 5X airline points. My CSR has a $300 credit, priority pass, and 3x airlines, but 1.5 when using ultimate rewards portal so it's just a little lower than Platinum when it comes to airline points. Not sure it's worth keeping both cards and my CSR isn't going anywhere.

Ameriprise Platinum $0 AF

this is the exit strategy. This year you apply, next year your SO applies..

Got my mom to do it late 2016, she has no Ameriprise relationship and no one has ever checked or called her on it.

No AF(450), + 2 free AUs(175), + 2 Global Entrys(100ea.), + $400 Airline credit, + 4 Delta Sky Club entrances(50ea.) = $1425 since September, and the only spend on it were things that got offset by credits.

I got the same welcome offer in the mail today. I'm passing on it as well.

That doesn't sound like a very good offer. You can get 50k with $2K spend on the PRG. The Platinum usually has 75K and even 100K bonuses.

If if you're gonna jump on the Amex train, at least make sure it comes wwith the best bonus.

I was under the impress that there was a lifetime ban on bonuses with Amex anyway? Even thought I PC'd from the AMEX Gold to Plat. I can't remember if I got the bonus for Gold. I guess I could call them. But I think I have made the decision to hold off until Amex steps up their game in the benefits department. One way would be to decrease their AF to $350. That would certainly sway those on the fence.

I'll take the CSR's 3X on any travel category over Amex's 5X on airline only everyday and all day.

Re: Amex Plat Offer. Just when I get out.....

Did you take an offer on the Plat before?

I'd pass and go for 75 or 100k when you find one.  Just my opinion.  But of course, do what's best for you.

Re: Amex Plat Offer. Just when I get out.....

Couple of things:
1) 50k/5k for Plat???? Crap offer. Should be at least 75k/5k or the rarer 100k/5k
2) Targeted Amex mailers sometimes do not come with the lifetime language. Read the T&C in your mailer carefully. If it doesn't say "bonus not available to those who have or have had this card" then you would be eligible for the bonus. If you can bypass lifetime language, I would say a 50k/5k Plat bonus would be acceptable. Not great, not crap, but acceptable.
3) Without a bonus offer, I would never advise someone get the Plat unless they're a Centurion freak. Unless you fly enough to make the 5x MR on airfare worth it, $450 AF doesn't make the cut.
4) No, Amex Plat never waives first AF

I have decided not to app for the Amex Platinum card. But Amex has been after me big time since I closed my SPG and Green card. Two offers in the mail and one in email. One was for the Platinum, the other for Hilton, and one for Delta. But I'll continue to sit in the garden until September.
