I have been an Amex cardmember and from what I can see from my app and my friend's app, if you get denied now for an amex, you will get a HARD pull even if you are a cardmember. This combined with the annoyance that comes with talking with rude CSRs is enough for us to stop using amex. I will be happy to send in a fax of approval letters from almost every other CC.

I have a couple of AmEx cards and got denied for one of the AmEx Hilton HHonors cards in November without it being a HP. This was right after another member said he got a denial and a HP, so this is probably still YMMV.
I'm sorry, but this isn't accurate. I did not receive an HP for a denial just 3 weeks ago when I applied for SPG.

Based on other posts it's probably still YMMV, but you provide a valuable data point that helps to remind us all that YMMV means just that... in other words, be prepared for a HP on denial even though most folks don't get one.
I'm sorry you had to be an 'exception'... I know all too well how much it sucks when something that isn't guaranteed but works for 'most' fails for me. ![]()

I'm thinking what happened was that your profile was borderline for the computer to approve with their old SP and they went ahead and did a HP with a current report. And with that current report your profile probabaly didn't meet qualificatoins anymore so therefore a decline. That's just my speculations.

From the info I have gathered on these forums I believe ojefferyo is correct. I think if you are borderline they will hit you with a HP and you might be denied. I was SP denied last month for the SPG business card.
You can't make a definitive blanket statement such as "Amex denial now HP for card members" based on your singular experience. The only time it happens is when their computer thinks the soft pull is borderline denial/approval and takes the additional step of doing a hard pull.
