@Anonymous wrote:Hey y'all. Just a quick question. A couple of weeks ago, I tried the Amex prequal thing on their website. It returned two 'pre qualified' offers. I applied for one, and was denied; it said the denial was based on my Fico score of 631. I've heard of others on here being approved with similar or lower scores, so I decided to call them and see if they'd reconsider.
Well, I caled this evening. The CSR I spoke to (very difficult to understand, due to his less than adequate command of the English language) said he'd submit my application for manual review, and that I'd get a phone call, email, or letter within 10 days with a decision. Is that how recons usually work? I've never tried to get a denial reversed before, so I don't know the process. Thanks!
I think your score is too low. What's holding your score down? Do you have baddies?
Although I wish you luck. I think the decline will remain a decline.

Amex has their own internal scoring system that looks beyond a score. They also make counter offers, ie rebuilder cards.

May I get a copy of the recon letter?

The OP's score is too low. They declined the OP. No counter offer when applied, went right to decline. It's going to stay a decline.
OP, any baddies? What's holding down your score?
You're correct, recon was unsuccessful.
I do have have some negatives. I have a few charge offs (all 2-3 years old or older), an unpaid collection (about 3 years old, hasn't been updated in close to a year, so I'm afraid that if I pay it or make an offer, they'll update it and drop my score even more), a paid collection (also about 3 years old, just paid it off in full about 4 months ago, and doing so dropped my score by ~15 points), and two 30 day late pays from over 2 years ago. I have about 7-12, inquiries, AAoA 2.5 years (oldest are 12 years and 10 years old), utilization fluctuates month to month, but is always below 30%; typically between 10-25%.
Someday I'll get in with Amex...
