Hi everyone,
I'm planning to app two new CU memberships this week. Along with my membership app, I'll likely apply for a new credit card at each institution. I was curious. Let's say both CU's check ChexSystems (mine's clean, last hard pull was mid 2022), but different FICOs.
Will there be any issues applying to two CUs in the same day? And let's say CU 1 approves me for a new credit card.
I don't want CU 2 to get cold feet because the see the Chex pull. I'm thinking if they saw it, they wouldn't know if I'd been approved for a card at CU 1 and so it wouldn't hurt my chances of getting approved for another credit card at CU 2.
Am I missing something? Would appreciate any insights.
Thank you!
Three years ago I applied simply to join two different credit unions on the same day (not for credit). Both were in the Portland, Oregon area, and I was denied by one of them because "it seemed like fraud". I even spoke to the reconsideration guy and explained why I was doing it (I wanted my Portland based company to be able to open a corporate account with them and wanted to have diverse accounts), and he said while that made sense, and he would remove the future block, he could not let me join then.
This was as a result of their Chex Systems pulls.
I have no idea how common this attitude is, but I figured I would provide a data point.

Yikes...I could see that happening. I was sitting here trying to imagine what would be the big deal if I tried to open two CUs accts in the same day, hearing your story def gives me pause. haha! And you were just trying to open accounts. I'll probably wait a few months between CU apps.
The second CU would easily see the Chex inquiry and could get cold feet because of the double apps. Could be something that they see often and possibly consider to be negative. Thank you for your data point @ThomasJNewton. Really helps to hear. If only most CUs didn't require memberships before allowing customers to apply for credit products. lol. But makes sense I guess.
Every Credit Union is going to have different Criteria for joining.
Most pull ChexSystems, but not every single one.
Some are sensitive to ChexSystems Inquiries, others are not as much.
It is going to be very much "YMMV" (Your Mileage May Vary)
Here is a short list of Credit Union Info [HERE]
I have been approved for as many as (5) Credit Union Memberships in (1) Day ,
[Credit Union Membership Spree]
Last count, My Credit Union Membership was 30+ CU's

From my personal experience Penfed and Navy fed are ok with it.
2 years ago i joined penfed and navy the same day, no problem, ymmv
However, i joined penfed with a small savings only and navy with a small checking and savings.

haha! 30+ must be nice. Certainly the direction I'm wanting to go. Agree, I'm betting there will be varying criteria per CU. I think what I'll do is call a few of them and speak with customer service. Couldn't hurt. Thanks for data points and info @M_Smart007!

Thanks for the data point @SUPERSQUID. Good to know that two of the largest are okay with that. I wish I hadn't burned Penfed in my bk. But... very fortunate and happy to have Navy.

Just curious but have you considered doing a pre-app phone call or 2?
Ask them about joining what you are trying to do tell them about the other cu ask if it will be a problem if one says yes and the other no, then you know what order to apply, if neither have an issue then just apply.
Often times for me it seems like calling in and letting them know what your goals are smooths out any potential issues, CU's are also much more about that relationship calling in or showing up in person if local speaks far more about your intentions than blindly shooting off multiple online apps.
I would also be straight with them about your goals "I saw your credit card mentioned on MyFICO's forums and it looks amazing I am looking to join to get your credit card now or in the future, would there be any issues I should avoid like joining a different CU who I am interested in starting a CD with this week?"
While on the phone ask about what CRA they pull what fico model used are they concerned about anything in particular for what I am trying to do.
One might pull TU, another Experian and neither Chex in that case they would never even see the other CU until a credit card reports. You might be stressing over nothing.

You gotta keep those millions divided up since only $250K can be inured by the NCUA!!

Wow great advice, thank you @Beefy1212. Yes, I was thinking of doing almost exactly as you mention. That said, I really enjoyed reading some of your suggestions. I agree, I've no problem being up front and asking the appropriate questions and was thinking similarly about the two CUs pulling different FICOs and perhaps Chex or not. Loved your idea about telling one CU that I'm applying for a credit card and that I'm interested in a CD at another CU. I'm for sure using that one.
Appreciate your insights! Thanks for chiming in.
