Went through this pre-approval process, gave ample identification info and received and confrimed two different security code texts. My credit reports are all spotless. I monitor them very frequently. Everything was fine until they requested that a copy of my drivers license be sent to them for further identity, I guess. I ended the process at that point. Just too much for a pre-approval process. I've never had anyone make that request before for a pre-approval, not even both Amex and Discover for which I was pre-approved and subsequently approved.
Has anyone else experienced this from the Apple card pre-approval process?
Thanks so much.
I've heard plenty of people that were asked to verify their identity with a form of (physical) ID when applying for Apple Card. In other words, it is quite common. However, they do not ask everyone to provide ID copies (I was not asked to share mine during my Apple Card application process earlier this year). My best guess is that they use a risk profiling algorithm that triggers the ID request.
If you think sharing your ID with a financial institution is not worth the effort for you, then you could decide to hold off. However, it is likely that they'll ask for your ID if you apply again in the future.
I understand how you feel. I have a fraud alert on my profile. I went through that but when they cleared it and it showed my pre-approval, I accepted and I was instantly approved with the new card appearing immediately in my Apple Wallet.
This happened to me. Funny thing is while going through my emails, I found several emails from Goldman Sach's with SP denials. Since then my credit score has increased and I'm finally in the "Good" range and the past 2 times I've submitted my info for kicks and giggles I get the dreaded "We have to verify your identiy" message. Cool. Took pics of my license and each time it comes back as not being able to verify my identity. I have no fraud alerts or freezes on my reports. Not really sure why they can't verify me as I've been in the Apple ecosystem for a very long time. I never bothered to figure out what the issue is or how to resolve. I monitor my CR and nothing has come back as being slightly suspicious. DH applied, was approved, and I'm just a participant on his account. That's been my workaround....and saved myself a HP.

It's not really a "pre-approval" so much as it is a soft-pull approval. If they tell you that you're approved, you have the option whether to get the card. If you decline their offer or if you're not approved, there's no hard pull. You'd only get a hard pull if they approve you and you accept their offer.
So while it has similarities to pre-approval pages like Amex or Discover, it's different in that the Apple Card "pre-approval" application is the credit card application. And that includes things like asking for a copy of your driver's license to verify your identity, if they believe they need to do that.
Edit: Updated to clarify when an applicant for the Apple Card would get a hard pull.

They are bound by the Patriot Act and KYC policies like any other lender to verify who you are and goes beyond just getting a text code -- there are several layers of ID verification. And, regardless if your CRs are spotless, different lenders have varying verification protocols and tools to verify identity. You mentioned Discover had no issues, but you'll see other posters on here where ID information (and in the extreme cases 4506C) requests were required for some individuals.
I was pre-approved for the fruit card a couple years ago and had to upload my DL. It failed on a couple attempts due to the background/lighting, but once accepted, the account was approved. Obviously, your decision, but it's more common these days for lenders to require additional information.
