Application For American Airlines Credit Card

Hi all,

I am currently trying to figure out a way to get approved for the American Airlines credit card which ever one it is in order to earn status with the airline without having to fly. I currently have 5 accounts open, with a credit score on equifax of 756, 6 inquires and a total limit of 35k with my average account age being 11 months and oldest account 1 year 7 months. I wanted to know what would be the steps I would have to take to getting approved for the American Airlines credit card as I was recently denied for the Globe card.

I don't know much about status or could care less for AA, but I do like the SUB awards with miles given through Citi for the AA CC's.  The best SUB offer for the spend is the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select CC, 80k miles for 1k spend.  With this inflight offer Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® Inflight Offer | Citi.com

As far as getting qualified/accepted by Citi for this CC is another matter.  They are inquiry sensitive.  First you need to know which CRA they pull from for your location.  Assume it's Equifax, since that is the one your providing info for.  Citi is the most sensitive to the first 6 months of hard pulls for your CRA they pull from.  Best is 0/6.

I don't know where your getting your credit file statistics from for Equifax with Vantage or FICO?  Did they give you a reason (letter) with why you were denied for the Globe?

There is a general preapp to see if your qualified for any Citi CC's.  But it is poor at best.  YMMV, but I have found that if the preapp is giving me a qualified Costco CC, minimum, as available, and I'm 0/6 on inquirys, then I'm a go to do a full app for any of the Citi CC's.    Otherwise you risk wasting a hard pull, as you did for the Globe CC app.  Here is the preapp  Find Out Which Citi Credit Cards You Pre-Qualify For | Citi.com

Re: Application For American Airlines Credit Card

So here are my current scores

Equifax 756

Experian 740

TU 759

They pulled experian, i have 6 inquires on there. They haven't given me a letter yet I am always on time with payments and should I try to get reconsidered for the card? I just hate how citi preapproval is just so horrible, like they don't even consider income in the pre approval application. But like any advice would help out like what I should do next how high my score should be my card utilization is at 2% with three cards with balances.

Your scores are fine for FICO and not the issue, thus utilization.  Your AAoA may be an issue, average credit card age.  But they will say what your problem is with them, in the letter, if that is the real problem?  Wait for the letter first.   How old are the inquiries on Experian?  They can be up to 2 years old.  You need to know how many in the past 6 months, for Citi.

Re: Application For American Airlines Credit Card

In the past 6 months I have had 3 inquiries including this one just now with the Globe card. I am also not understanding the citi 0/6 thing that you mentioned above.

0/6 means, zero hard pulls (inquiries) in the past six months.  If I had to guess, the 2/6 you had on applying with Citi was the primary reason you were denied.  O/6 best for Citi.

Re: Application For American Airlines Credit Card

Should I also trust Credit Karma approval odds for a card? So when I applied it was fair for me and now it is poor when it goes to possibly excellent is that when I should apply for the card?

No, they are not a reliable barometer, Credit Karma.

I guess I will try to apply again next year because if I wait 6 months then I lose out on Loyalty Points I could have had for this qualifying year.

What did the denial letter say? Try to act on those things. If you want something more personalized, try WalletHub - they give you specific credit improvement advice and tell you how long it's going to take. Hope this helps!
