Applying for a second AMEX

So I applied for my Amex BCE card back in June. I am looking into the Amex SPG at the moment. However, I was thinking that it would make the most sense to wait until January to apply. This way it gets backdated to January 2014 instead of December 2014 (almost a year difference).

Am I making sense here? Is that how it would work?

On another note, I just wanted to verify two things about the Amex SPG:

1. Since it is a full-fledged Amex Card (unlike, i.e., Fidelity), it will backdate.

2. Since I have never had this card before, I will be able to take advantage of the 25K bonus points offer.

Am I right on both these assumptions?

Thanks for any help! Smiley Happy

Yes, unless you have a (very) urgent need for the card now, it makes sense to wait till Jan.     A lot of the time this is overstressed (e..g in June, if the card has good value, it's not worth waiting till Jan for a minor backdate), but by Dec, probably.

And yes, it is issued by Amex so will backdate, and you should be able to get the bonus offer.

Re: Applying for a second AMEX

+1 wait until January. It will make your card appear as though it has been open for 1 year.

I love Starwood (and my SPG card)!

1. Yes

2. Yes

I've been eyeing the BCP for a few months, but I'm waiting until January 1, 2015 for the same reason. Good luck!

Re: Applying for a second AMEX

hi all, new to the forums!

im kinda in the same situation as the OP i guess. i got instant approved in september 2015 for my first amex (BCP) for $4k. last week (early november 2015), i requested a 3X CLI and they gave it to me on the spot, no income verification. i want to get the PRG. i just have two cards right now (WF platinum visa $13k and amex BCP $12k). no baddies, 735 FICO 8 score as of october.

should i take a stab at the PRG in a couple weeks? or just wait until january to make it look like ive had my card for a year?

cheers!

AMEX no longer "backdates" cards when reporting to the credit bureau. Any new card with them will be reported with the date you actually opened the card.

The fact that you just received a CLI will have no bearing on your approval odds. That will be based on your current credit profile and whether or not it meets the underwriting criteria for the card.
