So I was approved late last night for this card with the terms above. I didn't really pay attention to the APR last night (Hell, I might have, but I was dead tired and just didn't notice it or it didn't register) until this morning when I went to add it to my spreadsheet and brought up this screenshot. Needless to say, I was a bit floored.
So my rebuild only just ended a month or so ago and I'm only now getting really good offers. (Went from high 600's to mid 750+) Is 6.99% fairly typical for CU cards? I personally never carry a balance (or intend to) but it's nice to know I'm not going to get gouged if I decide to.
With that said, this is now my lowest APR card by a large margin.
As an aside: I just took out a auto loan @ 2.7% on Friday, or I'd be all over that 1.99%.
Congrats on a very nice approval, @AlanGJP!
And yes, credit union cards most often are significantly lower than banks, especially the largest national banks. Note that you got that rate on a basic low-rate, no-rewards Visa and usually those cards have lower APRs than rewards cards with most banks or credit unions. For example, I looked up the Gesa Credit Union's "Diamond Cash Back Card" and the APR starts at 10.24% compared to that 6.99% on their Platinum Visa.
Navy Federal CU's Platinum Visa (with no rewards) has a rate as low as 5.99%. But NFCU's rewards cards have a higher APR. For example, their Flagship Rewards only goes as low as 9.99% and their More Rewards as low as 9.65%. That's also why the AOD FCU Visa Signature is very rare since it pays 3% uncategorized and uncapped cash back rewards along with a FIXED rate APR of 7.49%. My PenFed Power Cash Rewards Visa pays 2% uncategorized and uncapped rewards along with a 9.99% APR. Compare that to Citi's Double Cash that only goes as low as 13.99% currently for new approvals. I have a local credit union card that pays a nominal rewards rate (approximately 1%) at 8.50% or no rewards at 7.00%. There are even some cards at less than Navy Federal's 5.99%.
Great job on the rebuild and qualifying for this nice APR! ![]()

Thanks for providing so much clarity. This is my first low APR card, so I was genuinely floored when I actually paid enough attention to notice the APR. The lack of rewards justifying the APR makes a lot of sense.
When I was given card options there were only two. I vaguely remember thinking (I'd had a few beers, it was very late, etc, some other excuses, etc...)
the % back was really no better than what I already had so I took the lower APR card. I didn't really process the 6.99% at the time, just that it was quite a bit lower than the rewards card offer. (Thinking back - as best as I can... I think it was in the 10-15% range when I made my choice)
As someone that never carries a balance, I rarely pay attention to the APR outside of glancing at it to make sure it's not some absurd amount. Personally when considering rewards I prefer saving points versus cash back and usually pull out my Amex Gold for most purchases.
Cant beat the CU's. Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!
@AlanGJP Congrats on the approval.. Refi that car 2.7 to 1.99 is a nice drop especially if you can keep the same terms.
