Thanks for your advice in advance. I currently have 3 secured cards (BOA, local bank, Cap 1) which I got in June and am interested in trying to get an unsecured card here at some point. About a month ago I checked the Capital One Pre-Qualified Offer App and was "offered" the Platinum and QuicksilverOne cards. I decided to hold off and wait until I cleared some stuff off of my credit reports before applying. In the last month, I was able to remove 20% of my negative accounts. I am currently challenging with debt validation letters accounts that make up around 20% of my negative accounts. The rest are student loans which I am in the default rehabilitation program for and will see some minor improvements on in a few more months when the default status is removed and the loans are resold.
I do not have any need for credit for at least the next year or more, so I am wondering if It is a good idea for me to try for one of these cards now or if I should wait a few more months in case I am able to clear off a few additional negative trade lines. I understand it isn't a race and I cannot make up years of bad decisions with a few good months but I finally have a secure job that is allowing me to try and fix mistakes I made in the past and don't want to waste potential opportunities. I am open to any suggestions if I am approaching this all wrong.
I went ahead and applied for both this evening after work. I submitted my app for the QS1 first and was approved for $500. I then decided to apply for the Platinum card also andwas approved for $500 on that cad also. Super excited to got from only having 3 secured cards for a total CL of $2,000 to now having 5 total cards with a CL of $3,000. I know it is a very small victory but glad to see some results after working to rehab my credit these last 6 months.
If anyone has any suggestions on other cards I should aim for your advice would be greatly apprecited. My Transunion/Experian/Equifax all around the same mark of ~525-550 prior to the negative tradeline removals and the HP from Cap1 for those 2 new cards.
I think I will probably take it easy and just let everything play out. I am on the fence whether I will cancel the secured cap1 just yet. I don't really need the money at the moment but having some savings hidden away that I can access in about a year would be nice for when I move across the country to go back to school.
