Chase AARP Denied

Since I really wanted this card I figured I would try for it.

Got the dreaded 10 day. Decided to call and ask if my application was denied and they stated "It was denied for opening too many accounts in a short period of time"

They pulled TU. I inquired specifically if it was because of my inquires and he stated that was the least of their worries.

Back to the Garden.

So, how many accounts did they state you had opened in such a short period?  How many are reporting?  I think the "calling" thing did you in, unless it was auto-declined and you just received the letter.  They do factor inquiries during a manual review but if other items stand out (i.e. new accounts, high utilizations, previous negative experience with them, major or recent derogs), those will be the items that will be addressed right off the bat.

On the upside, you can always try again once things age on your CR profile.

Re: Chase AARP Denied

They mentioned 3 cards Amex and Cap1. I closed a Cap1 and opened a new one a couple months ago. Amex has been opened more then 3 months.

3 months wait is not enough I see.

So I may have killed my chances because I called, hmmm I will remember that next time.

There could be a lot of variables at play with regard to your outcome.  Some individuals want/expect instant gratification, and if a 7-10 message pops-up they're quickly dialing up the UW folks.  While in some cases this can work with expediting the process (i.e. further verification, upcoming trip, etc.); yet there are other times that it's best to let things just run their course.  Everyone's different about their approach and outcomes will definitely vary.

It appears the consensus has been on some recent Chase threads (given their recent policy changes on their flagship cards vs co-branded ones) in the "waiting things out" strategy since the outcome can yield more favorable results (provided one meets the creditworthiness criteria of course).

I second that.  I have 40+ new accounts in the last two years and just opened 5 Chase cobranded cards in the last 5 weeks, 3 of which was in the last two weeks.  Definitely, in my experience, waiting it out is better.  I had been denied the Slate and IHG when I called and an UW flat out denied both apps due to too many new accounts.

Re: Chase AARP Denied

Sorry to hear, jamp. AARP is a good card to have. Garden and work on the issues that Chase identified specifically for you; you'll have a stronger profile and better chances next year. Hang in there!

Re: Chase AARP Denied

Just a follow up. I recon'd once over the phone then I emailed EO.

EO said that I already recon'd once so that cannot be overturned.

Oh well someday maybe. They had my TU at 618 also, which is pretty low.

So Chase and Citi are pipe dreams.

Been eyeing the Voice card from Huntington bank but I will wait until they prequal me or something.

Yeah. Stands to reason why. That score is too low for Chase/Citi so i would take the time to aggressively put in the effort to get your scores up. It's a huge pain i know, i been there, but the only remedy is using the time to make the most of your current cards and READ, READ, READ the other section of the forums http://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Understanding-FICO-Scoring/bd-p/ficoscoring as well as address any issues that might be hindering your FICO scores and at some point you will absolutely break out on the way up and it will make a huge difference for you when that happens. It's the waiting for that change that is the worse but will eventually pass.

Strike all that and sorry OP. Your Discover FICO is MORE THAN ENOUGH in my opinion. Looks like as CC points out that they used an internal scoring formula.

Wonder if that was their CARS score for you.
