Probably cause of a co-branded card and Marriott might be pushing Chase and possibly eating some of the losses if Chase takes a loss, meaning less strict lending requirements? Might be the case on easier approvals?

"Compensation" can take many forms and there may be poorly defined or unpublished relationships between board members of the various companies involved both direct and indirect.
