Hi all! This is my first post on this forum ![]()
I am about to apply for the new credit card and can't decide between Chase Freedom and Discover IT
I'd like to get credit card with higher credit limit (7.5k-10k would be great) but I have no idea which one will be easier to get.
I like what both cards offer and I know the offers, I just need your opinion which way would be better to go to get higher credit limit card
Discover has sent me many mail offers, sometimes few a week - did not try any of them
Chase: I am banking with them for over 4 years (I have a checking account with continoius direct deposits every week from my job, savings account with all my savings reaching over $25k)
Also I have Chase Slate credit card which I got in December 2012 with CL of $3000, a year later they raised my credit limit to $6000 and stayed the same till today.
I have a Capital One credit card since 2008 ($750 limit)
My Capital One Credit Tracker score is 755 as of now
My fico score was about 770 6 months ago
I keep utilization between 7%-10%, never went higher
I make $40k a year, and made additional $8000 this year on the side (documented - direct deposits to bank)
What card should I apply for to get higher limit?
Chase, the bank that knows me well and never had any problems with it, or Discover that knows someting about me since they are sending me offers at least one a week saying how good I am in keeping my credit in good condition blah blah blah....
Can you help please?

A high credit limit ins't guaranteed with Chase or Discover. Alot of factors goes into determining that - their internal scores among otther thing. Since you bank with Chase, there may be a chance but not a sure thing. If you really want a high limit, Amex is the way to go as they are known to be very generous. Another is credit unions, Diners etc. I hope this helps.
If you didn't get a Diner's card by now then cross that off your list, we don't know when they are actually going to open up again.
I have both cards but I don't know if what I'm gonna say will help since I've had my Freedom card for a lot longer than my Discover It card. I was approved for $200 for my Freedom card the moment I turned 18 in 2010. Never had luck getting a CLI until this week... to $400. I was approved for my Discover It card back in February with a Transunion score of 767 for $1500 and received a CLI to $2000 in July. So from my personal experience, Discover seems to be generous. I also have history with Chase. I banked with them since before they bought out WaMu (approx. 3 years before I applied for Freedom). Hope this helps a little. Best of luck.
Both banks are rather conservative about going over $5,000. Typical CL's for Chase Freedom and Discover are < $3,000
I think your chances of getting a credit limit over $5,000 with either of those cards is very low
My DW has similar scores to you with a thin file and was approved for $5k from Discover. I have scores in the 720 range with a thick file and only got $3k. My Freedom has $8, but I've had that card for a while and gotten a few auto-CLIs.
I think you'll get about the same limit from each, so if you want the CL, not the card, go for AMEX BCE, and then take advantage of 3x CLI.
If you plan to travel abroad, go with Freedom. Discover is harder to use overseas.
A thing to note, additionally from what people have told above, is that in case you get a lower CL, Discover is better with CLIs than Chase.
Discover gave me a little higher limit than Chase for the Freedom. But it is definitely a YMMV kind of thing.
For you I would apply for the Freedom. It would be your second Chase cards. Many people believe Chase is more likely to give higher limits on your second card. I am not sure if that is true. However, if the limit is not high enough you can transfer part of your Slate limit to the Freedom. Or even close the slate and move all but all that they will let you over.
