They just want to get to know you and once they do they open their world to you. Give it 3 months of good payments then you can try again if you want.
depending on what your profile looks like and your scores, you could give it the good old college try and recon once more. But I am thinking that they want you to establish yourself with them and once you are in with chase, they do treat you well. There is the 5/24 rule, so I can see them denying you for extra credit if with the freedom approval you are now over the 5/24 limit?
If you are not, then it wont hurt to try again if you can back up your case. Otherwise, dont dont open any new cards and let chase say 3-6 months of history with you and then should be good to go.
Thanks all, I may try again but I probably won't use another HP for it. I wasn't over the 5/24 rule so it must just be that they want to feel me out first. When I applied for the Slate I only had 1 new account-- the Freedom card that was approved a minute earlier. I was also added as an AU in January on an AmEx card, but still, even if that counts against the 5/24 rule I would technically only have been 2/24.
I will try recon again on Monday and see if they budge-- if not I'll have to give it more thought in a few months.
