After burning Chase in 2008 on an Amazon card, I recently app'd for a Slate in a moment I can only describe as, "credit approval induced madness". After doing so, I read several posts about Chase and their long memory/grudge, so I didn't expect much when my "30 days" status on the phone line turned to the dreaded "7 to 10 days".
What I received in the mail, however, was a letter telling me to call for verification. When I called, I was only asked the most basic of identity questions, nothing complex, nothing about income. The UW texted me a verification code, and when I correctly reported it, I was approved for a 1k Slate! Since my goal was to establish a relationship to build on, I am satsified with this starting point.
The more I think about it, the more puzzled I am by the verification. I wasn't able to receive the text at the first phone number I gave the UW, the phone number that I would have put on my app (I use Google Voice for voicemail), and had to give a second number before I could successfully receive the verification code. What, if anything, was being verified by this conversation? Has anyone had a similar experience?

I haven't frozen any CRs myself, but I do receive CSID services through my employer due to a large data breach. Maybe that's causing a flag?
I find it odd that all one has to do is call and say, yes I applied and read back an identification code txt'd to a cell phone (of course you can choose the # they send the message to). Certainly NOT anything secure.
But who's complaining? NOT I! LoL. Chase knows what they are doing.
I guess the magical TXT code/auto-approval limit is 3, because when I appled for the CSP, they did the same thing, but said I would also have to fax over proof of my SS# (now that is secure). I'm not sure why it wasn't requested the 1st 3 times.
Synchrony is notorious for this. How do you think I racked up 10 Synchrony cards all in the span of 1-2 days?
Comenity @ least sends a physical letter in the mail, and tells you to call in to verify your "identity".
Capital One doesn't send codes to verify your identity via TXT message. Neither does BofA or any other big name bank.
I wonder what other CC issuers do this?
