Score doesn't matter when it comes to approval of Citi cards, but it does matter when it comes to SL. Citi is now VERY picky....and nobody knows for sure what is their underwriting criteria...but they do have different underwriting criteria of each of their cards...For example-most people with many revolving credit cards or too many total available credit limit do get rejected for this AA card even if they might have highest score of 850 unless you get pre-approved offer in the mail....If you search on net, then you would find people are getting denied for this card left and right enough though they do not have that many total available credit but they were denied for the reason like you have. Citi has now becoming a bad lender as it denies an application for premier credit cards for so many manufactured reasons, if not this one then another one....
So, it doesnt matter how perfect your credit and credit score are, they would always find a reason to deny you. Citi is now far and more tougher bank to approve an application for its premier credit cards than any other bank in the US. Chase only has 5/24 rule, at most, and 97% of Chase applications do get approved on reconsideration, but not Citi ones....If I were you (OP), I would stay away from Citi as its keep denying you no matter what....rather you should go with Barclay's Aviator one....

Chase has a long memory also. BankOne for me, now I'm in.

You are right...most banks do have a long memory, and CUs will NEVER let you in again...However, OP's situation is not about having any past default, rather Citi kept denying all applications for this particular card. A lot of people don't know that Citi has a different and a tough underwriting for this particular card unless you receive a targeted offer. They have millions of reasons to deny you, and most of them are just manufactured...There is no any confirmed strategy to get success in getting this card...You could have score of 850 and picture perfect credit, yet still you could get denied for this card. I am telling you about this for many years' research on this card....Unless you receive targeted offer in the mail or if you are Citi's Client being a high roller kinda client, the success of getting this card is just about luck, trust me because 99% of the time you would get denied.
My best friend has a score of 831 and she has not applied for ANY credit in last 4 yrs...not even CLI...don't know more than 1% of available credit...She was denied for the reason same as OP even though she has only $60k in total available credit...When Citi couldn't find any reason to deny her, they gave this reason even though she does use her available credit...Citi seems to expect her to use all the available credit of $60k....They would manufacture any reason just to deny you....You can find this thru your search online....Citi is becoming like Penfed now....
My mother got denied for the Air France Bank of America credit card, but got approved for the new Wells Fargo Autograph Journeyservice mark℠ Card. she is a Wells Fargo customer. Do you think that having a bank account with the bank of the credit card help? In that case, maybe having a Citi bank account would help getting approved for the Citi Platinum Select.
I closed my Barclays Aviator last January.
Based on the experiences of my own and 6 of my family members, I could tell you for certainty that banking relationship only works with BOA and not with Chase, Citi, US, Wells Fargo, Capital One . I have credit cards with all these lenders without any banking relationship with them. However, Bank of America NEVER gave me any CLI on one of its credit cards but the moment I opened deposit account, CLI is kept coming now all the times...Again, these are my own experiences and observation.
I received a letter from Citi saying why my application was denied:
- Your credit report shows a high amount of unused credit compared to your available credit lines.
- Your credit report shows too many recent inquiries.
Which bureau does choir pull and how many up s do you have with them? It may be mostly recent hps. Some banks are picky about those.
The bureau is Experian.
These are the hp dates with them: March 2024, December 2023, August 2023, April 2023.
Anyone tried complaining to OCC about getting denied for too low of utlization. Seems like a way citi is discriminating against high FICOs
I just applied for this card and was approved for 15k.
722 FICO, 12 inquiries last 2 years, 3 inquiries last 6 months. One inquiry 3 months ago was for Citi Costco which was also approved. Prior to this approval I had 5 cards, 0% utilization, 65k total credit.
