Citi card application troubles

A year ago, I had two Citi credit cards.  One a diamond, the other a Custom Cash.

I unfortunately ran into a situation where I had to use both and max them out for something House related and wasn't able to pay what was owed.  The fact that the auto-pay kept bouncing did not help matters.

After that, the credit cards got closed.

I was finally able to pay what I owed off in the end, but was suggested by a teller to wait a while before applying for another card again.

Tried applying for another Customs Cash only to be denied because I already had one despite being closed, then tried a Citi Secured, only to get rejected because "credit priveliges are currently restricted."  What does that even mean?  I never get a clear answer.  Customer service was not helpful on that front either.  My assumption was that it had to do with the closed credit cards, which the teller highly believes to be the case.  The teller then suggested trying to re-apply in six months.

Six months pass and I try to apply for Citi Simplicity online but get rejected again (the inquiry has shown only on one of the credit bureaus and it isn't Experian).  They said a letter would be sent explaining why I was rejected, but I haven't received anything yet.  And then I find out Experian FICO score isn't showing anymore due to inactivity (it was in the good range earlier).

So...what to do....I'm in a conundrum.  Should I just try another credit card company?

yes

you are asking for forgiveness far too soon and the returned payments only make it worse

I would not expect to be forgiven by citi for several years, if not longer

Starting FICO 8:
Current FICO 8:

4/6, 4/12, 8/24 new accounts

This^^^^

From what I have read on the forum ..Citi has a Verrrrryyyy long internal memory.

Sorry OP, returned payments are like the ultimate sin to lenders.

ETA: Yes, you should try another credit card company. (As long as you do not have derogatory records on your credit files)

The worst I have are a couple hard inquiries and FICO score no longer showing on Experian.

I agree with @M_Smart007 and @GZG  Yes, you should just move on.
