I got an interesting answer to this question which said that it's not the lender who merges inqs it's the credit bureau and they only do so when they are not sure if it's two inqs or just a duplicate inq with citi different cards appear differently when they pull so the credit bureaus know it's two inqs.

Interesting, but inaccurate. CSRs will say anything for an app, or cli request. ![]()

Wasn't CSR was on another forum someone offered a detailed explanation and was quite adamant about it. If this is not the correct answer what is and what is the source of the correct information?
doesn't make sense to be honest why a CRA would want to merge as they want the money from each HP. Unless they charge the creditor regardless and save money on their side and don't re-run it.

No, I think the argument was that if two apps came in in close proximity and the CRA could not tell if it was two different Inqs and thought it was just a duplicate inquiry that they treat it as one. The idea is the CRA in that situation isn't sure if its just a glitch with someone refreshing their screen or whatever or if it was actually two seperate inquiries.

The CRA would treat them separately, unlike auto-financing or mortgage applications (depending on how they are coded by the lender). So, if you accidentally (or attempt to circumvent the system) apply 2x with the same lender, two hits will be recorded. The CRAs would count them separately (even if it was done within minutes of each other).
FWIW my Citi HPs show up as different names, all from citi, but variations of Citibank, CBNA, etc.
But they don't shy away from pulling and double pulling my report for EACH app, granted I've never done two on same day.
