Credit card for Groceries

Hello Everyone, i've been trying to get a card that i can use primarily for groceries and even a daily driver if it has the potential to be one, i already have a couple of cards which i use and they fit my lifestyle but none of them work as a groceries card, i have a trip to disney world in a couple of months (september) and everything is already paid, but i could use it to pay for restaurants and snacks in the parks, so i could hit the min spend for a card if it has a good bonus, any recommendation for a card that has good multipliers for groceries?

Also I don't know if this would help my chances for any of the recommended cards but I would be applying in 3 months.

Thanks for all the help.

I would just keep spending in the chase ecosystem as you're already there. If you want a little bit extra, you can convert your debit card into a Disney debit card and get many of the same perks as the credit card.

@Anonymous If you're looking for a good daily driver that covers a lot of categories and aren't biased towards any ecosystem, you can toss a glance at the Citi Premier.  For $95 AF you can get 3x on dining, hotel, airfare, gas, and grocery stores.  Not a bad for a very small AF card that has ties to all of the airline alliances.

Re: Credit card for Groceries

These are some of the good cashback grocery cards that are available right now, imo, at least in terms of rewards structure:

Cap1 Savor One: 3% uncapped groceries as well as 3% on dining, entertainment, and some streaming services.  I think this is a good option if you want a simple rewards structure, can use the other categories, and don't mind the triple HP.

Navy More Rewards: 3x points on uncapped groceries as well as 3x points on restaurant, gas, and transit.  Points redeem at 1 cpp.

Amex BCP: 6% back on up to $6k of groceries, 1% after, $95 AF.  This card should get you more grocery cashback than an uncapped 3% card if you spend between $3,200 and $10,250 on groceries annually.  (Or between $3,200 and $11,666 if you would put grocery spend in excess of $6k on your QS or NFCU CR.)  This card's other cashback categories are 6% streaming, 3% gas, and 3% transit.

Snych Verizon:  This is only useful if you have Verizon service and plan to keep it longterm, since the rewards are in the form of "Verizon dollars" that can only be spent on Verizon bills or purchases, but its reward structure is 4% on groceries and gas, 3% on dining, and 2% on Verizon bills and purchases.

As far as being a daily driver, I don't think any of these fit that bill, since they are all 1% back on off-cat, but paired with a better off-cat card they all have decent returns on a few everyday categories in addition to groceries.

Re: Credit card for Groceries

Have you considered Navy's More Rewards? 3x on groceries, dining and gas with no AF. Navy is also notorious for large limits on your 2nd card😉

@Loquat thanks! Thats pretty much what I'm looking for, do you think I would have good approval odds?

Re: Credit card for Groceries

@Slabenstein thanks for all that great info!

I don't have Verizon, so I don't think that would be a good choice for me personally. My only problem with Cap One is the triple pull, it does sound like a good card but I don't want a triple pull at this moment, but the BCP and Navy More Rewards sound like a great option, im definitely going to look more into them!

You do have a nice lineup already, @Anonymous.  However, looking over it, I believe you could benefit from a no-AF card earning a base 2% or higher, uncapped and uncategorized, instead of the base level 1.5% you earn with Capital One Quicksilver and NFCU Cash Rewards.   Best option if you could qualify would be the AOD FCU Visa Signature earning 3% cash back on everything.  Other options would include Citi Double Cash, Pay Pal Mastercard, or PenFed Power Cash Rewards.

For specifically a grocery card, here are some of the best pics.

  • You already have a great grocery card for 3 months out of the year in the Chase Freedom Flex, which normally includes one quarter of 5% on groceries.  You could supplement that with one or more other rotating category 5% cards such as the Discover IT.
  • Do you shop at Walmart or Target for groceries?  You can earn 5% on cards with either chain, uncapped.
  • If you use Verizon for cellphone service, the Verizon Visa earns 4% (uncapped) on gas and groceries as well as 3% on dining and 2% on Verizon purchases.  (The kicker is that rewards must be redeemed in Verizon dollars towards account credit.)  *Edit to add: Since I started typing this reply, I see another suggestion about Verizon and that you don't have it, but I will leave this in the list for others to reference.
  • Navy FCU More Rewards AMEX earns 3% on groceries (uncapped) as well as 3% on gas, transit, and dining out.
  • UMB (United Missouri Bank) Simply Rewards Visa earns uncapped 3x points (3%) on groceries, restaurants, gas and discount stores.
  • Bank of the West World Mastercard earns an uncapped 3% on groceries, gas, and restaurants.
  • SAFE CU (California) earns 3% on groceries, gas, and restaurants plus 5% on a selected category.
  • AMEX Blue Cash Everyday earns 3% on groceries (up to $6K) and 2% on gas.  Blue Cash Preferred earns 6%* (*4.4% after $95 AF) if you spend exactly $6K on groceries, plus 6% on streaming services, 3% on gas and 3% on transit.

Re: Credit card for Groceries

@Aim_High thanks for all that great info! I'll definitely look into it. Do you have any opinion on the amex gold card? I've heard good stuff about it but seeing the no AF BCE and the BCP, I don't know if it makes sense.
