Current Amex cardholder applied for another card, hard pull then denied

I currently have a gold card, I applied for an everyday card last week and saw an instant hard pull and thought awesome I'm approved. Wrong, 3 days later I received a denial. I was under the impression that if you are a current cardholder and applied for another card you wouldn't get a hard pull if you were denied...

Current FICO 8 Scores: 4/2017 (TU 680, EX 725, EQ 661)
Starting FICO 8 Scores: 4/2015 (TU 470, EX 500, EQ 439)

as you discovered the rule is not in stone.  if there is something flawed in the denial you can recon it but it may cost you yet another hp.  did you look into the blue+?  better card imo if you fit the profile.  good job bringing your scores up the way you have, you have a lot to be proud of there

I have read that you have to be at least a year with Amex (member) cardholder and applied for another card you wouldn't get a hard pull if you were denied. That's what I saw in the threads.

There's also the possibility that something changed on your report between the last SP and the HP. That could result in a preliminary approval turning into a rejection when they do the HP. As such, the no-HP rejection isn't guaranteed.

That is not fully correct. I was denied for an Everyday Card and did not obtain a HP for those. That was 2 moths after I got my first card and one month after my green card.

Is the gold card in your name or are you an AU?
