Denial Reason

With American Express allowing you to "apply" and see your chances without having to take a hard pull, unless you accept - I decided to give it a go.
I have applied before and been denied due to mainly my FICO being to low, which I expected - and took a hard pull for my troubles.  But that's neither here nor there and I digress.

Tried the gold Delta card - was denied, which I wasn't to surprised by, but the reason struck me as strange.  I know that there are a multitude of reasons a company can put as "the reason", but I've never seen this one or had this as one.

And for context - I am not participating in anything of this nature.  Now I admit, that I am in the forbearance or whatever for student loans, like a lot of people are, but the reason never came up when I applied previously.  But I don't think it's listed as deffered or whatever on the reports themselves, unless I am mistaken.
I even looked at my Experian report via the free annual report and on their site and it shows nothing that would be considered what Amex said they "saw".  I am paying my bills when due, paying more during the month, etc and am in the middle of getting down  utilization across my few cards - it's still not ideal, but way lower than it had been.

Any insights as to what this means, besides the literal meaning Smiley Happy, just a bit of curiosity on my end as y'all have a lot more experience with everything than I do Smiley Happy - see below

Thank you for applying for Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card. We are writing to let you know that unfortunately, we cannot approve your application at this time for the following reasons:

They're not thinking straight. The deferral is not one you sought, it was one that was granted across the board. I think if you really want the card you should recon.  You might also want to check how the student loan deferral is being reported in your credit report.
