I checked my card offers and the BCE showed up. I hesitated, but applied anyway sigh...reason for denial? I'm dead.
Risk score not available due to report of deceased status.
I called amex and they told me to call experian. Called experian and was on hold forever!!!! Nothing in my report showed that I was no longer living. Called Amex back, they will have to do a recon and a hard pull. Whatever!
This really scared me! Has anyone else had deceased as a reason to deny? Are they just grasping at straws to tell me no?
Wow that is crazy. Did you put your info in correctly when apping? Or maybe they have a previous card holder with a similar name? Those are the only things I can think of. Hope you get it resolved soon.

This is actually more common than you might think... until very recently all SS#s were (somewhat) sequential, so a simple typo by a coroner or a funeral home and it's very possible somebody who is still very alive (such as yourself) will have some work to do. This is different for SS#s issued after June 25, 2011 (more info here), but the solution doesn't help anybody over the age of six.
There was a thread not so long ago where somebody had this very issue specifically with Amex, and it was a chore for them to resolve... they ended up having to get the Amex EO involved. I personally feel this is exactly the type of situation the EO is meant for; if your EX does not indicate you are deceased (which seems to be the case) the Amex EO would be my next stop if it were me, or else you could be bouncing between lower-level CSRs in perpetuity.
Good luck, and let us know how it turns out!
