A friend of mine awhile back said he fried Macys store card for a few hundred back in the 90's and he applied last year for one and was denied. They told him once you're blacklisted, you can never get their card again. Don't know how true that is as I have never dealt with Macys.
Droopydog, it could be due to that (an alert being placed on your credit file). I had a similar thing happen with me @Chase, and when I called the recon line they asked me if I had ever been a victim of ID theft. I was one of many victims of the OPM data breach and they gave us credit monitoring to prevent any ID thefts. Once I gave them all the answers they needed to prove my identity, I was approved.
I want to thank everyone for their input (and patience). I called on Monday to see if I could speak with someone in the credit department but grew impatient with the auto system and hung up. Called on a whim today because I'm still freaked out by the whole thing and this time followed the prompts and was able to speak to someone.
Seems the macy's/citiback credit department just completely butchered my application. Apparently I was not denied, but someone was supposed to have called me on Monday to verify my identity. They didn't, and the person I spoke to today was not sure why. She offered to push my application through and I was ready to tell them to forget it, since the main reason for applying was to take advantage of the large discounts to buy some duds for the wife and I for a gala that takes place tomorrow. Oops.
Ended up going through with it and was approved for 10k. Now I am wondering whether I should run in and buy the clothes and look for emergency alterations? Of course, I have something to wear tomorrow but it doesn't go with what my wife is wearing (so she tells me).
Priorities people .
Thanks again everyone.
Congrats @Anonymous!
