I am a student with a limited credit history (about 7 months with a Chase Freedom Unlimited $1,800 CL) and a FICO score of 709. I applied for the Chase Sapphire Preferred and was denied. Called recon line and was told my credit history is too limited (makes sense). I called again to explain that my income is going to be high and to note why exactly I want the card, but was denied again. Should I try again? If not, considering my credit history is so small and they are unlikely to approve me any time soon, how long should I wait before applying again? When will my chances be good?
Chase is well-known for wanting at least a year of positive, revolving credit history. Sounds like "time" is the main factor. Your file is indeed slim, but on the plus side, you are already in with Chase. I'd say use your FU and PIF each and every time and after it is a full 12 months old, apply again.
Yes, probably wait until the 1 year mark. You can apply for another card in the meantime, possibly an AMEX card, and then 3x CLI it in 61 days to help your utilization and show that you can handle a pretty decent limit since the CSP is minimum $5k. I applied for the FreedomU pretty much after the 1 year mark, and about 2 months later or so, I started getting prequalified offers for CSP through their app. 1 year & 8 months later from the start of my credit journey, I ended up getting the CSR. Patience is key. I wanted this card badly since I started, especially with the bonus, but just keep building your score and your limits and then it'll come to you.
