My son is 19, he has a thin file (this is the first month a score has reported).
As the title mentions he apped Discover today from a preapproved offer for an IT card on their website. It was a flat denial. I have been reading alot on this forum and I was frankly shocked by that outcome.
He also apped AMEX Cash Magnet at the same time, approved for $1000 SL. With the possibility of the 3x in 61 days this is awesome news!
Any way, here are his DP's
He has only one CL, a Capital One Secured card. SL $300 ($149 deposit) it Automatic CLI'd to $650 after 5 months.
no lates or baddies, 1 CL reporting, UTI ~10% he lets it report and PIF's the day each statement cuts.

Is it possible that the Disco algorithm was "offended" that he used Cap1 for his secured then went to Disco for "real" credit lol?!
It is what it is at this point. I am encouraging him to get an Discover IT secured to take advantage of the denial HP, he is very sour toward Disco at the moment however. How long does he have to app Discover Secured without sustaining another HP?
It's a good life lesson for him. Don't get emotional about credit, it's just business.
Agree with the above poster......like the old saying from Michael Corleone in The Godfather, "Not personal Sonny, it's just business"
Discover can be a bit finicky from what I've read, they have this reputation of being a lower level credit card outfit, but that's certainly changed through the years. I have had one of their secured cards for 14 months, my score has gone up nearly 100 points since when I first got it, but they won't graduate my card. Low balances, spend on it and then immediately pay it off, but they don't want to take a chance on me yet.
That looks like a pretty solid profile for an approval, you never know though, sometimes a denial is just a denial.
He just called the recon number from the "Backdoor Numbers" thread. He was told they do not recon Credit Card Applications.
She provided the following denial reasons:
Insufficient lapsed time since last HP (He apped for Sheffield Financial 8/10/2018)
Insufficient number of satisfactory trade lines
Sounds like sour grapes that they werent the choice for his secured line to me!
Discover doesn't do recons in the traditional sense ... but sometimes you can get them to transfer you to a credit specialist during the daytime hours..who he might have been able to coax a secured offer out of them.... His credit file is THIN still.. HPs hurt more than once its thickened up.. Still think it woldnt be a bad second card... he cant take this personally.. very few folks get stuff on their first try early on in the game.. seriously. Have your son sign up for discovers credit scorecard.. and then try a preapproval in 3 months... and see what happens... worse case he waits 6 months.. But they very likely would offer him it then... Its not jealousy. its.. he hasnt really proven himself to them and still is so new.. it would be easy to default... ... Think it would be a good second card. just need to recover from the HPs a bit..
Did they offer him the secured card with the denial ?
Reason being if he decides to apply for the secured they will probably pull another HP.
I doubt it is sour grapes.
I had $80k available with Cap One when I got my Discover.
I also previously burned Discover.
SL was $9,000 and I got 3 CLI in less than a year for CL of $17.5k.
My grapes were pretty sour when I applied.
I would just open up one or two more cards and try again in a year if you really want Discover.
YMMV - GL!
DON'T WORK FOR CREDIT CARDS ... MAKE CREDIT CARDS WORK FOR YOU!
You son needs to understand that when it comes to credit, the CCCs are the ones who are taking the risk. The longer your credit file open, the longer a person has proven their creditworthiness, the more attractive someone becomes to the CCCs. Credit building is a marathon, it is not a sprint. It takes time to build a file and a FICO score. Your son's FICO of 720 looks great but there is nothing in his file to back it up. Give it time. Continue to use the Cap1 card wisely and make timely payments in full and that is the best way to prepare for your first unsecured CC.
